History Channel Scores a C
Just Genesis ^ | March 4, 2013 | Alice C. Linsley

Dramatic and conventional in its portrayal... that's how I characterize the History Channel's presentation of Genesis and Exodus. Did it present Abraham's Horite people faithfully? Not at all. This was a rehash of old interpretations that fail to tell the whole story. In other words, a missed opportunity.

The program clearly stirred interest because after it aired this blog had over 300 reads in less than 30 minutes. The higher traffic continued the following day. People arrived from different search engines with questions like "Who was Abraham's firstborn son?" and "What color was Abraham?"

If you watched the program, try to imagine theses changes:

“what color was Abraham?”

seriously? Why does anyone think skin color is relevant to Christianity?

I don’t get that, either. However, I’d bet he was kind of dark tan, like most Middle Easterners (or anyone who’s outdoors all the time); and his firstborn son was Ishmael.

I just hope they accurately portray the Christmas Story, where Santa Clause has to go into Baghdad with machine guns to rescue Jesus from Saddam. They just barely get away!

The second segment last Sunday wasn’t as good as the first. Too long on Samson, a weak strong-man. The fighting scenes looked like a cheap action flick. Hopefully, the next one will be better, particularly when depicting the teachings of Jesus, the Word made flesh.

I remember when the History channel was going to do a program on the War of 1812 and the theme music they played when advertising the program was .... Dixie ... written in 1859 or so.

The assertion that Abraham was Kushite/Proto-Saharan is to say the very least contentious. All of this is based on the notion that Semites and Hamites intermarried to the point of dissolving distinctions between the two. While there certainly are instances of intermarriage between rulers (Sheba, for instance), the notion that the Jews were as Hamitic as they were Semitic is bordering on silly.

The grade is based solely on how long the miniseries’ history matches that of Alice Linsey, who has highly unorthodox (no pun intended) beliefs. She calls herself a “biblical anthropologist” (?) but cites no advanced degree.

Just awful.
Diversity ninja angels destroy Sodom for ... partying?, chasing angels?...

And this thing all the “documentaries” are doing of presaging something, then showing it, and then repeating it-especially before asnd after commercial breaks- it’s maddening. You can skip a third of the show and miss nothing.
Action scenes are pathetic.

D+
At least they didn’t show Abraham driving his group in a SUV...

The real reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was buried.

And the ninja angels were horrible.

I won’t watch it again.

Dramatizing the Bible is an impossible task to begin with. No way could it be done justice. Every reader of the Bible is attracted to certain parts of the Scripture. So the question becomes, “which part of the story do we highlight?”
It becomes a judgement call by somebody, because you can’t dramatize the whole Bible. Too long.

Of course Biblical drama is always (”The Passion” excepted) disappointing. I am trying to keep the idea foremost in mind that there may be many people who are seeing the “basic” stories of the Bible for the first time. My prayer is that some will have enough curiosity aroused to venture into the Bible on their own. That should be our prayer and hope.

It does have its problems, but we must remember how long it would have to be to explain everything that is in these stories. I just hope that is plants seeds where they are needed most: In the hearts of Americans.

It was in consideration of it’s possible appeal to children and the very childish that I didn’t rate it F.

Man has dramatized the Bible for centuries and I’ve never seen worse than the first episode which is all I can force myself to warch.
Of course I can’t argue against “any publicity is good publicity”. Pathetic though the show is IMO maybe it will indeed pique someone to the Bible.
