From Rome to Africa: Meet the 20 men who could be pope
NBC ^ | Tracy Connor

Posted on 03/12/2013 7:00:48 AM PDT by Hoodat

As the papal conclave begins in Rome, wrapped in mystery and secrecy, there is no indication that the 115 cardinals will be deciding between just a couple of front-runners in choosing a successor to Pope Benedict XVI.

Milan's Cardinal Angelo Scola and Brazil's Cardinal Odilo Scherer are names that keep cropping up on the lists of papabili, but NBC News Vatican analyst George Weigel says no fewer than 20 men could get votes when balloting starts Tuesday in the Sistine Chapel.

They come from the traditional bastions of Italy, from growth areas like sub-Saharan Africa, even from the United States. Only time — and a puff of white smoke — will reveal which one will emerge as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

Here, in alphabetical order, are the princes of the church who Weigel says could be considered for the top job: . . .

“The list from the Holy Spirit has but one name on it. This list has twenty names.”

WOW! We can sure hope there is an overlap!

Ravasi is currently listed at 8 to 1. Personally, I’ve got money riding on Cardinal Burke. At 35 to 1, it will be a nice pay day.

The Philippines is a hostile nation? Really? It is overwhelmingly Christian. Although on the southern island(s) there is a muslim rebel movement. Is that what you are referring to?

From Voice of the Martyrs:

Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines, experiences continual violence between government forces and minority Muslim rebels trying to establish an independent Islamic state. Muslim groups control four provinces on the island under the name of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), and several Muslim terrorist organizations are active in the area.

Most attacks against Christians occur in or near the ARMM, but incidents also occur outside the ARMM as terrorists seek to expand control. Muslim terrorists in the Mindanao region believe killing a Christian will gain them entrance into heaven. Islamic terrorists have been responsible for bombings at train stations, on buses and in other areas of Mindanao. They have also burned the homes of hundreds of Christian families and killed dozens of Christians.

Oh, and they list the religion as 30% Muslim, 70% other (which suggests it is not 70% Christian).

Same here. Keep a close eye on what I would add is a 21st cardinal, not on that list: Raymond Burke. He could be a surprise choice.

Had seen that. That is why I wonder if all the talk surrounding both Dolan and O’Malley hurt or help them?

Other FReepers can give more detail, but the Phillipines is cut-up geographically in terms of islands and other divisions; some areas are Christian, others are almost completely Muslim. The Christian areas generally are good places for any Catholic to be.

I’m guessing Cardinal Tagle would be my kids’ favorite as well, due to charisma and youthful ambiance. But I’m afraid we traditionalists would be left behind in a puff of white smoke. I could be wrong.

I didn’t hear of him either. Agree, he looks interesting, if not, promising. Prayers up to the Holy Spirit.

Some in the secular-controlled media tend to put forward those they think can be manipulated.
