“Oh, he is such a good man.”
“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good...”
Matthew 19:17
And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?
Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Was Jesus declaring that He himself was not good? Obviously not.
Was he declaring that we can't call anything good? No. Otherwise we can't say that Reagan was a good president, or that the Raptor is a good warplane.
Jesus was indicating that we cannot do some good and enter into heaven on the strength of that good.
He was also declaring that we must seek God the Father, the source of all good and that we must obey the commandments to gain Him.
And He was also indicating that He, Himself was God. Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God.. He wasn't saying the man was wrong to ask Him - he was indicating the truth about Himself.
Hope this is helpful.
You don’t use that word for people? It’s just a common, everyday word. I don’t read Matthew as forbidding its use....
