Police in a Utah town dominated by one of the largest polygamous sects in the U.S. have been stopping women from leaving, according to a top lawman.
Arizona's attorney general Tom Horne yesterday announced a criminal probe of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and the Marshal's Office, which serves as a small police force in the twin polygamous towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.
During a news conference held in Phoenix, Mr Horne also announced that a 26-year-old woman had been granted temporary custody of her six children and had fled the town of Colorado City, the home base of the FLDS.
He said she was forced by by its jailed leader Warren Jeffs to marry her brother-in-law at the age of 14, and had since been virtually held captive in the town on the Utah-Arizona border, along with many other women who want to leave.
'What they do is say, "Everybody watch her so she won't run away". Then she can't leave,' Horne said.
'Women who wanted to escape have been forcibly held by the marshals against their will.'...

Heck, the Mormon men have held their women as prisoners from the get-go; it isn’t a big secret. One of the wives of the earliest founders did escape and was doing her best to spread the truth. She disappeared suddenly, never to be seen or heard from again. Foul play was suspected.
And the fathers pimp out their under-age daughters to the dirty old leaders. How this can occur in America is astounding; it’s third-world stuff.
This is today's THREE MINUTES HATE. Truth has nothing to do with it as long as it's defamatory and sensational.

‘Women who wanted to escape have been forcibly held by the marshals against their will.’”
The church does not have a spokesperson to speak on its behalf, and Jeffs, who is said to still rule the sect, is jailed for life in Texas after convictions on child sex and bigamy charges.
Horne fought last year for a bill in the Arizona Legislature aimed at abolishing the Marshal’s Office in Colorado City, and replacing law enforcement there with deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.”
I guess you are right. Sad.
Wait a minute.
Sounds to me, Sherman that you're in favor of adding more qualifiers 'tween religious groups, right?
Yet are you consistent? (Do you do that when Mormons regularly claim to be "Christian" minus few if any qualifiers?)
MAINSTREAM Mormons can apparently...
(1) Baptize the dead...including Jews...
(2) Seal the dead in a marital union they NEVER had on earth (For example, see how Lds "married" this deceased Roman Catholic priest to a woman in their vital records: Mormons even marry the dead by proxy (Vanity: The OTHER World Series)) [Citation: According to research provided by Helen Radkey into the LDS Church's FamilySearch database, it indicated that Belgium-born Damien was baptized by proxy, given his endowments and sealed to his parents for eternity Oct. 22, 1983, in the Los Angeles Temple. More recently, Damien was sealed to a wife, which Radkey calls bogus, on March 15, 2000, at the Jordan River Temple in South Jordan. (Salt Lake Tribune, Newest Catholic saint baptized and 'sealed' to wife in LDS temple?" Oct. 13, 2009)]
(3) Wear supposedly magically "protective" underwear...
(4) Say that our Father-God rose up to the "god ranks" via manhood before being selected by a "council of gods" to be our god...
(5) Fail to harangue Brigham Young for teaching both Adam=God and self-bled blood atonement...instead honoring him by naming their most prominent university system after him...
And a whole host of other UNChristian things...
...and few FREEPERs will call mainstream Mormons on the carpet for saying, "We're Christians, too..."
[IOW, if THEY are Christians, too, then all of the above -- and more -- gets lumped together and linked in as representing what we Christians believe and act upon as well]...
...YET you find it somehow offensive that there's Mormon overlaps between what the mainstreamers were practicing into the early 1900s and their spiritual descendents are practicing now???
May I remind you that there's STILL a LOT of close enough theological connections 'tween the fLDS and the LDS re: what they believe???
If LDS Mormon = "Christian"...
...Given that mainstream Mormons are further from Christianity than fLDSism is from LDSism...
...And furthermore, if groups can claim their own turf -- meaning if LDS can claim to BE "Christian" --then why can't fLDS on those same grounds claim to be "Mormon"???
Well, the way I see it then...
...is that the fLDS have no less claim on calling themselves "Christians" than the LDS do...right, Sherman???
A 'Christian'-is-a-Mormon-is a fundamentalist Mormon-is-a-'Christian'...??? All in one loop...???
Those who claim that Christians cannot set "Christian umbrella" boundaries between them and Mormonism are on thin ice turning around and attempting to draw "Mormon umbrella" boundaries 'tween various Mormon groups.
Well, for example, people noticed that there were many young females in Mitt Romney's retinue who were never identified. Who were they? I believe that Ann Romney is Mitt's first wife and his only public wife. I don't believe Mitt Romney ever provided any public assurance that, if he was elected, he would oppose efforts to normalize plural marriages.
You forgot to post my little couplet:
As the fLDS now are, the LDS once were.
As the fLDS now are, the LDS may become.
Call National Enquirer, you have a scoop....
And it was posted by one of FR's most HATEFUL bigots!!!
We all KNOW that Headquarters (the legal counsel guys) has sent out warning letters to media outlets proclaiming that ONLY the SLC folks are to be called MORMON!; yet this person (spit) continues to claim that that FUNDIES are the 'true' MORMONs; just because they happen to follow our precious scripture faithfully!
--MormonDude(This "C" person is gettin' me HOT!)
That happens every now and then.
In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet, for our salvation depends on them.
1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say Thus Saith the Lord, to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by mens reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidencythe highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidencythe living prophet and the First Presidencyfollow them and be blessedreject them and suffer.
I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captainhow close do our lives harmonize with the Lords anointedthe living ProphetPresident of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Speaking of that...
How do members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints feel about calling the members of its various spin-off sects Latter-Day Saints, Christians, or Mormons? Or about those sects calling themselves Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? (There was an earlier campaign by LDS to have journalism style books use the word Mormon to refer only to LDS, and not RLDS, FLDS, or other LDS sects).
For a man who bragged about holding things together, Joseph Smith, Jr. doesnt appear go have done a good job of it during his lifetime. Wycam Clarks Pure Church of Christ spun off in 1831. This trend continued. There were six LDS sects spawned in the 1830s, eight in the 1840s, two in the 1850s, and seven in the 1860s.
Do those responsible for the Mormons are Christians campaign consider these denominations to be Mormons or Latter-Day Saints? Surely many of these denominations are much closer to mainstream LDS than LDS is to Christianity. Many stick to Smiths teachings and old temple endowment ceremonies.

Are members of those LDS groups Mormons? Latter Day Saints? Christians?
Do the folks in Salt Lake City have a problem with any of those groups, who believe in the restoration of the original church by Joseph Smith, calling themselves Mormons or Saints?
Most of these divisions in the Latter-Day Saint movement occurred over the issue of polygamy or succession of the Prophet. Sects broke off when Joseph Smith was still alive, and when Brigham Young was named prophet, because they didnt believe in the practice of plural marriage either publicly, or in some cases when it was practiced in private and denied in public.
Of course, there was the great split between Rocky Mountain Saints and Prairie Saints, when LDS members couldnt agree on a successor prophet to Smith, Jr., and the church went to Utah, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania under Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon (senior member of the First Presidency), James Strang, Lyman Wight, Alpheus Cutler, William Smith, David Whitmer (a BOM witness), or Joseph Smith III (son of Joseph Smith, Jr.). Almost all of these individuals still has multiple sects in existence that date to an 1844 decision about who should be the next President/Prophet of the church.
The Prairie Saints split into sects over the issue of whether Smith practiced polygamy. Rocky Mountain Saints had many, many spinoff sects after the 1890 Manifesto groups that still practice plural marriage.

Thanks to ScoutMaster for all the hard work here!
This guy did...
"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;
and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,
and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS SECTION 132
5157, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 5866, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.
51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.

And the BoM was written by...
"Now the way he translated was he put the urim and thummim into his hat and Darkned his Eyes than he would take a sentance and it would apper in Brite Roman Letters. Then he would tell the writer and he would write it. Then that would go away the next sentance would Come and so on. But if it was not Spelt rite it would not go away till it was rite, so we see it was marvelous. Thus was the hol [whole] translated."---Joseph Knight's journal.
"In writing for your father I frequently wrote day after day, often sitting at the table close by him, he sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us."
(History of the RLDS Church, 8 vols.(Independence, Missouri: Herald House,1951),"Last Testimony of Sister Emma [Smith Bidamon]," 3:356.
"I, as well as all of my father's family, Smith's wife, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris, were present during the translation. . . . He [Joseph Smith] did not use the plates in translation."
---(David Whitmer,as published in the "Kansas City Journal," June 5, 1881,and reprinted in the RLDS "Journal of History", vol. 8, (1910), pp. 299-300.
In an 1885 interview, Zenas H. Gurley, then the editor of the RLDS Saints Herald, asked Whitmer if Joseph had used his "Peep stone" to do the translation. Whitmer replied:
"... he used a stone called a "Seers stone," the "Interpreters" having been taken away from him because of transgression. The "Interpreters" were taken from Joseph after he allowed Martin Harris to carry away the 116 pages of Ms [manuscript] of the Book of Mormon as a punishment, but he was allowed to go on and translate by use of a "Seers stone" which he had, and which he placed in a hat into which he buried his face, stating to me and others that the original character appeared upon parchment and under it the translation in English."
"Martin Harris related an incident that occurred during the time that he wrote that portion of the translation of the Book of Mormon which he was favored to write direct from the mouth of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He said that the Prophet possessed a seer stone, by which he was enabled to translate as well as from the Urim and Thummim, and for convenience he then used the seer stone, Martin explained the translation as follows: By aid of the seer stone, sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet and written by Martin and when finished he would say 'Written,' and if correctly written that sentence would disappear and another appear in its place, but if not written correctly it remained until corrected, so that the translation was just as it was engraven on the plates, precisely in the language then used."
(Edward Stevenson, "One of the Three Witnesses,"reprinted from Deseret News, 30 Nov. 1881in Millennial Star, 44 (6 Feb. 1882): 86-87.)
In 1879, Michael Morse, Emma Smith's brother-in-law, stated:"When Joseph was translating the Book of Mormon [I] had occasion more than once to go into his immediate presence, and saw him engaged at his work of translation. The mode of procedure consisted in Joseph's placing the Seer Stone in the crown of a hat, then putting his face into the hat, so as to entirely cover his face, resting his elbows upon his knees, and then dictating word after word, while the scribes Emma, John Whitmer, O. Cowdery, or some other wrote it down."
(W.W. Blair interview with Michael Morse,Saints Herald, vol. 26, no. 12June 15, 1879, pp. 190-91.)
Joseph Smith's brother William also testified to the "face in the hat" version:"The manner in which this was done was by looking into the Urim and Thummim, which was placed in a hat to exclude the light, (the plates lying near by covered up), and reading off the translation, which appeared in the stone by the power of God"("A New Witness for Christ in America,"Francis W. Kirkham, 2:417.)
"The manner in which he pretended to read and interpret was the same manner as when he looked for the money-diggers, with the stone in his hat, while the book of plates were at the same time hid in the woods."---Isaac Hale (Emma Smith's father's) affidavit, 1834.
