This sounds odd for a country in which the churches on Sunday morning are largely empty.

I wouldn't say that -- depends on where you go. I lived in the south of England, Brighton, for years and the Catholic churches I went to (there were two in the city limits and one outside) were all packed for all 4 to 11 masses each Sunday and sometimes on weekdays too). The Coptic Church in nearby Hove was also packed the one time I went there and I peeked in a Baptist church there and it was also packed.

The Catholic Churches in the north when I went on holidays were also more or less full in Edinburgh, Bristol, Cambridge etc.
