Mikołajki is a popular festival in Poland -- it's the day gifts were traditionally given. Worth nothing that St. Nicolas is very popular among Orthodox as well -- when I visited various icon museums I see first Jesus in various depictions, then Mary with Jesus and then St. Nicolae or another ancient Egyptian hermit saint St. Onuphrius who is depicted naked with a big long beard covering him.

I once read a book about Greece from around 1900. Some uneducated man (fisherman or peasant) was asked what the Holy Trinity was and he answered, "God, the Virgin Mary, and St. Nicholas."

San Onofre, California, near San Clemente, is named for St. Onuphrius.
