Was John Lennon a Genius?
You make the call!

No.
The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Don’t forget Roger Miller and Ray Stevens.
You mean the guitar solo ? There is no drum solo on Taxman .
I meant the guitar solo.
No !
I did enjoy the McCartney albums of the 70s—McCartney, Ram, Band on the Run—which might fall within your time range. Also, rock and roll is a young man’s game. People tend to grow out of it. Which doesn’t explain why he didn’t age into a Cole Porter, but, hey, I was never on board with the genius label.
It is surprising his God awful are most acts away from the studio and reverb, session musicians, double tracking vocals, autotune (which sounds awful on its own but can be used so as you aren’t assailed by it, though pop in an older song and you’ll be struck by its absence), etc. There are a few exceptions, and they are the few genuinely talented singers—I don’t know, say Linda Ronstadt—and instrunentalists—say the guys from Rush or Eddie Van Halen.
his = how
I’m not a genius, but I play one on Internet!
Actually he was more a genius of stealing melodies or parts of melodies from songs other people wrote. George Harrison himself said that, said he could name a song that every Lennon song ever came from.

And yet it was George who got busted for (subconsciuously)plagiarizing the tune to My Sweet Lord.
Post Beatles - George put out (IMO) the best music. See Traveling Wilburys.
