(RNS) Most Americans say that employers -- even religious ones -- should provide birth control coverage to their employees, according to a survey released on Monday (Dec. 3).
The poll by LifeWay Research also showed that almost two-thirds of Americans (63 percent) believe businesses should be required to provide the coverage for free, even if contraception conflicts with the owners religious ethics.
As part of the Affordable Care Act, the 2010 health care reform law, President Obama issued regulations that require most employers, including some religious ones like Catholic colleges and hospitals, to provide birth control coverage. The administration has said it may expand the policy to accommodate additional religious organizations.
In the meantime, however, dozens of Catholic dioceses, as well as Christian colleges and business owners who oppose contraception on moral or religious grounds, have sued to block the mandate from taking effect.
Last Wednesday (Nov. 28), a federal appeals court in St. Louis sided with a Catholic business owner by issuing a temporary injunction temporarily halting the mandate. Federal judges in Michigan and Denver have also issued temporary injunctions blocking the mandate, according to Reuters.
Most Americans, however, believe that businesses (63 percent), nonprofit organizations (56 percent) and even Catholic and other religious schools, hospitals and charities (53 percent) should provide free birth control coverage to employees.

I don’t recall being asked.
Same here and who knows how this was push polled.
Should is a value judgment
Now add
Should they be forced by the state to provide, with strict penalty and possible prison time for failure to do so. See how it works out
Oh, I see...
This must be the part of The Constitution that says “You can do whatever you want and ignore the rest of this document if the polling is in your favor”
How about a annual pass to disneyland same thing sex is like going to an amusement park
probably 75% of those polled think “business” should give “free” ponies to anyone who wants one too
maybe question should be “How much are you willing to pay for someone elses’ birth control”?
Every product or service has an intrinsic cost of implementation. If I were an employer and were asked to provide a benefit for free, I would have to reply that I could but that I would not be able to give anyone a raise for the next ten years.
The left has transformed the population of the US into a bunch of Zombies who always wants the other guy to pay his share of the taxes and the expenses of life.
Sickening!
Most of America worships at the altar of Sex... they want to have their god honored..
does this mean I can get my Dr. to write a script for condoms?
It doesn’t matter. A republic was instituted to protect the individual from the whims of “most” others.
RNS coverage by Daniel Burke
Burke does not discuss the method or question agenda of “LifeWay Research” or who was the sponsor of this poll. Worse yet seems accept results unquestioningly.
Who is Burke? What is Life Way Research? Why is it being reported this way by RNS ?
Check for Dem affiliation.
Spay/Spank.
Arrest anyone in Kraft who doesn't give up free Jello Pudding Cups!
What part does a business have with a persons reproductive functions? Should the employee have to ask their boss if they can have sex?
My what a tangled web they weave when they practice to decieve. Why doesn’t the government just come out and tell us that they want our family lines ended?
Life Way seems to be a leftist site, providing “modern insights”.
We’re in the age of free stuff.
Romney promised jobs and a pro-business agenda.
The Marxist Community Agitator promised higher taxes, bigger government, and more free stuff, not to mention the full implementation of Obamacare.
Clearly this isn’t our country anymore. As a Californian, I was hoping and praying the REST of the country would learn from my state’s mistakes-—if not California’s mistakes and misguided policies, than at least bankrupt Europe.
But no, that was not meant to be. Obama would have won both in 2008 and in 2012 WITHOUT California’s electoral votes. So it’s not just my state that is screwed up. Obama won 25 other states.
If you guys think CA is screwed up, Washington is even more bankrupt. CA has $167 billion in debt outstanding. Our national debt is over $16 trillion-—more like $100 trillion when unfunded liabilities such as Social Security and Medicare are tossed into the mix.
We are kidding ourselves if we still think this is somehow a “center-right” nation.
We are deluding ourselves if we think the the Fed can bail us out of our ruinous deficit spending——tha nation is ALREADY effectively bankrupt. Period!!!!
We are really deluding ourselves if we still think we are a superpower as well. Romney accurately pointed out in the final presidential debate the true size of our navy, and nuclear deterrent and conventional forces are no longer nearly what they used to be. And of course, you now have the liberals doing their social enginerring in thing in the military-—getting rid of don’t ask don’t tell, and even allowing same sex marriages being performed on military installations. The whole thing is quite pathetic.
This is no longer the country I once knew. It’s over. Looks like the House GOP is going to cave on taxes as well. We are going to be taxed to death. Here in CA the voters just passed Prop 30 which raises taxes. The Dems have supermajorities in the state legislature and can now raise taxes without GOP legislators or even new ballot measures. Obamacare is kicking in with at least 20 BRAND NEW TAXES alone contained that piece of crap——and of course the GWB tax cuts will be expiring in just weeks. Add it all up HUGE in enormous tax hikes are on the way.
These times demand strong action. Mass democracy has proven to be an enormous failure as the masses will just vote themselves more public largesse at other people’s expense. We need to go back to being a LIMITED GOVERNMENT CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC. I don’t think EVERYONE should have the right to vote. Should a person who collects welfare, owns no property, owns no businesses, no shares of stock, pays no taxes be permitted to vote in a federal election?
Something is TERRIBLY wrong in this country. Not the country I grew up in. This is a bankrupt obamanation pure and simple.
Thinking about this, aren’t there thousands of businesses who ONLY offer a paycheck as compensation?
Does a company/business HAVE to offer more than that?
One can only hope that if asked “Should the cost of providing contraceptives to everyone be factored in to your hourly wage?” less than 63% of respondents would say “Yes.”
