The Religious Right is Dead

Guys – have a quick puff of your joint before heading down the aisle with your boyfriend. In addition to re-electing Obama, various American states voted to legalise dope and gay marriage. OK, so they weren't necessarily the same states, but you get the picture. Last night was a victory for secular liberal America – or, to put it another way, America's emerging secular liberal majority. The United States is still pious by European standards, but the gap is narrowing every year.

You cannot visit American bookshops without being struck by the popularity of atheist cheerleaders or agnostic self-help gurus; when I meet a young New Yorker or Californian I assume – as I would in Britain – that they don't go to church, have liberal positions on abortion and homosexuality and generally despise the conservative religious activism that, until so recently, had the power to elect presidents.

Two points worth noting about this election. First, the Religious Right – and how dated that phrase already sounds – united around a candidate who, by most standards, is not even a Christian.

I think Mexican Catholics most likely voted for Obama. Have to say my Mexican American friends who are first or second generation born here (50 yrs old and up) voted Romney.

After 160 years of an almost unbroken political record, you pretty much have to conclude that the Italians know exactly what they are doing, in regards to Rome’s goals for America.

Where is your data? No one knows I am Catholic at my polling place... I don’t advertise it.

You know you are pretty much full of cr@p. Quit maligning and dividing, you are no better than Obama and his minions.

Gee, another personal anecdote, that doesn't apply to the rest of the population.

My personal anecdotes are more likely more reliable than your Karl Rovian exit Polls.. which have proven to be so much spit.

... have to add.... what do you think they are using for their data? Personal observation as reported in an unscientific manner by personal manipulation by personal pollsters. What a crock!

LOL, we have been looking at the voter demographics for a 100 years or more, only Catholics claim that they are made up, or that such magic is unknowable.

Yeah... I noticed that all the pollsters and their little white boards were right on the money in this election weren’t they? The information they get in an exit poll is only as reliable as the person giving it. You live and die by polls, I don’t. Exit Poll = cr@p asked + cr@p answer. I for one am pretty much sick of our elections being gamed by exit polls that then preclude them from counting the votes before they declare a victor. They are calling races before the votes are counted and reluctant to back off when it’s close. The data given in these polls is completely trusting the honesty of the provider and it is anecdotal, ... oh my... you don’t like anecdotal.

"No. We are no longer in a society that thinks religion belongs in politics and the government."

If you think you can separate the two then you have no understanding of Christianity. Time to get right with the Lord because there is a hard rain coming.

Some Christians believe the Bible and their directives from God should control everything they do. But when our Founders designed the Constitution, they deliberately created a government that would NOT be directed by Biblical or other religious directive but rather by the rule of secular law.

That is not to say our Founders weren’t God-fearing and Christian, most were. But looking to government to follow and enforce Biblical and Christian beliefs is fallacy. The Bible can control YOUR life all you want it to, but not our Government. Jesus is not President.

"...but rather by the rule of secular law."

Where does that come from? What does it even mean? Values must be informed by something. A society must be governed by shared ethics to be free. A society governed soley by "laws" rather than ethics will always become authoritarian. Always have and always will.

I would also note that secularism is also a religion. Yet one with absolutely no basis or foundation for objective morality. “An evil man’s ways are right in his own eyes.”
