An alms box for voluntary contributions for relief of the poor. It is called in some places corbona (a treasure box) and has been found in churches from the earliest days of Christianity.

I lived in Nova Scotia for a short period of time. The Halifax newspaper ran an article where they showed that some families (that were presently on welfare) could be traced back 200 years of living on Alms donations from the church and then government welfare when it bacame available.
