FULL TITLE: Outrage at friar's claims that it is often the teenage boys who seduce priests in religious sex abuse cases... and he calls Sandusky 'a poor guy'
A friar has sparked outrage after claiming it is often the boys who seduce priests in religious sexual abuse cases.
In an interview with the National Catholic Register, Father Benedict Groeschel of the conservative Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, said he did not believe a priest found guilty of sexual absuse should go to jail if it was his first offence.
He even went on to describe disgraced Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky as a 'poor guy'.
Father Groeschel, an influential voice in the American catholic community, has written several books and appears weekly on a religious television network.
He said: 'People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to [be] a psychopath.
'But thats not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster 14, 16, 18 is the seducer.'
He added: 'Heres this poor guy Sandusky it went on for years. Interesting: Why didnt anyone say anything? Apparently, a number of kids knew about it and didnt break the ice.
'Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime. It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didnt think of it in terms of legal things.'
'If you go back 10 or 15 years ago with different sexual difficulties except for rape or violence it was very rarely brought as a civil crime.'

I’m speachless....
Probably a lib in disguise.
Actually, he’s a big-time figure on ETWN

They need to get a warrant and check this guy’s computer. Probably some very interesting — and disgusting — things in there.
Suppose this is even remotely true, The Priest shouldn’t just say no, go away, not right, not interested?
Un-freakin-believable.
The Mayans were right. It’s all over 12/21/2012.
Weirder and weirder everyday..........
Methinks you are on to something.
I met Father Groeschel years ago at the Washington March For Life and used to watch him on EWTN before he was seriously injured in an accident.
He prayed outside of abortion mills for years. I always looked up to him (and I’m not Catholic).
This is shocking and heartbreaking.
He's the founder, IIRC of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Sadly, in 2004, he was hit by a car, and suffered broken arms, legs, head trauma, and was hospitalized for a really long time.
IIRC, he suffered either some heart attacks, and strokes during the subsequent hospitalization, so, I think he's probably "just not right in the head", anymore.
I heard he has brain damage from a bad accident. There was a thread earlier today on this.
Now I understand why Friar Tuck was always hanging out with those merry men.
FWIW: He’s pretty ill and has cognitive problems, the story was pulled and statements issued.
Bet they won’t find a single thing. These freaks know how to ‘lock’ a computer so that the FBI’s best people can’t even see into it.
There was a guy who was accused of child molestation, I think, and I remember reading how no one could come up with the many codes to get into it. (I think he was in the DA’s office or something like that and he killed himself when he was surrounded by LE.)
Father Benedict Groeschel is suffering from dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Over the last year I’ve watched his cognitive abilities fail drastically. You have no idea who this man is, or what he’s accomplished in his life.
Father Groechel is an upright and holy priest. I’m thinking this is just another hit piece on someone the media doesn’t like.
The fact that it came from email, too, bothers me.
Father Groeschel, an influential voice in the American catholic community, <<<
LMAO...Not any more Pal!
Yes, he should not have been interviewed in the first place due to his chronic ill health. This really stinks of bad political orchestration of some malevolence.
Excuse me. You have no idea who I am.
And my comment was an answer to someone else, not you.
Fr. Benedict Groeschel is a PhD Psychologist and a good conservative man. He works in the streets in Brooklyn and is well-respected. Do you just think they are taking words out of context and making a mountain out of a molehill? And what might be the reason?
Thank you, heights. He is a good man, and yes, his cognitive abilities have deteriorated a lot over the last year.
