How wonderful. Newly minted Olympic champion Missy Franklin of Denver is thinking about becoming Catholic. I have presumed she was Catholic and noted that one of her first comments after winning a gold medal last night was to thank God.
Here's what would surprise many conservative Catholics. Her spiritual interest has been roused primarily by her Jesuit high school. I've heard wonderful things about the Kairos retreats over the years and am so glad, that for Missy, Catholic high school is having the impact that it was created to have.
"Franklin is not a Catholic, but she said life as a student at a Jesuit-run high school has her considering joining the church.
My experiences at Regis Jesuit have absolutely impacted my spiritual life, in so many ways. I am considering converting to Catholicism; Im currently Protestant, she said.
Going into Regis Jesuit, my faith was not a very big aspect of my life. Taking my first theology classes, going to my first Masses, going on my first retreats, I began to realize how important God is in my life and how much I love him and need him, she continued.

Prayers for Missy. I thought she was already Catholic, too.
Interesting. I knew she went to a Jesuit high school but I didn’t know she wasn’t Catholic. Do it, Missy! :)
This must be something new. When my sons were attending a Jesuit High School in the late 1970s, we were told that the Jesuits were forbidden to teach high school aged girls. There was a Dominican run girls school next door, but any joint classes they had with the boys from Jesuit were taught by lay teachers.
I heard tonight that she is a Justin Bieber fan. I guess we can’t all be perfect.
When I was her age I was a Stan Getz fan.
(I still am)
I have two brothers who are graduates of Regis and I myself attended Regis for a year back in the 70s when it was still located in North Denver near 50th and Lowell. If Missy Franklin converts I believe that this will be one of the few times in the history of the school that it brought someone to the Church, rather than drive them away.
God Bless her, WELCOME, and congrats for winning the gold!
Some Jesuit high schools facing a declining enrollment, have begun enrolling girls.
The Loyola School, a small Jesuit high school in Manhattan, began enrolling grils in the 1970’s, and is fully co-educational.
The other three Jesuit high schools in NYC (Fordham Prep, Regis, and Xavier) have remained all-boys.
