I agree; this was a war between two incompatible cultures, in which religion played no role (but for the fact that the attackers were from a culture that IS a religion as well). If we were to be punished for our transgressions against God it would have happened decades ago...
The actual term the Bible uses is `egel massekhah which literally translates to "[male] calf of casting" or [male] calf of molten work." It is sometimes referred to as `egel shel zahav (calf of gold) but this term is not found in the Bible.
The word for bull is par, but that is never used for the calf. Interesting tidbit: the Hebrew word for ox is shor, which came into Aramaic as tor and into Latin as taurus.
