Elijah is taken up into the sky

[1] Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind Eli-
jah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.

[6] Then Elijah said to him, “Tarry here, I pray you; for the Lord has sent me to
the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not
leave you.” So the two of them went on. [7] Fifty men of the sons of the prophets
also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing
by the Jordan. [8] Then Elijah took his mantle, and rolled it up, and struck the
water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of

before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “I pray you, let me inherit a double

not see me, it shall not be so.” [11] And as they still went on and talked, behold,

Commentary:

2:1-13:25. Having concluded the section dealing with kings in the time of Elijah
(cf. 1 Kings 17:1-2 Kings 1:18), the biblical narrative now focuses on Elisha.
First it tells how he succeeded Elijah (chap. 2) and then it goes on to cover his
wonderworking and prophetical activity, up to his death (chap. 13). The account
of his death, which occurred at the beginning of the eighth century BC, brings
to a close a period of the history of Israel spanning the careers of two great pro-
phets, Elijah and Elisha.

Elisha’s activity is different from Elijah’s in many ways: firstly, Elisha’s miracles
are designed to resolve difficulties of his contemporaries, whereas Elijah’s were
performed to demonstrate the sovereignty of the one God; secondly, Elisha is
much more involved than his predecessor in political affairs and is much closer
to the kings, too; finally, Elisha has more contact with the groups of prophets
than Elijah had. Elisha is, then, a prophet much closer to the people, showing
them the love God has for them.

2:1-25. Elisha becomes the heir of his master’s spirit when he sees Elijah being
taken up to heaven (vv. 9-12). The signs which Elisha goes on to work win him
recognition as Elijah’s successor – first, from the other prophets, once they are
convinced that Elijah is indeed no longer in this world (vv. 13-18), and then from
all the people, who witness extraordinary prodigies worked by Elisha (vv. 19-25).

2:1-12. This passage deals with one of the most mysterious, and also the most
popular, episodes in the Old Testament – Elijah being taken up to heaven by a
whirlwind. God wants to show the special destiny reserved for Elijah on account
of his fidelity, a destiny similar to Enoch’s for having walked with God (cf. Gen
5:21-24).

In recounting this ancient tradition about Elijah, the sacred writer highlights as-
pects of Elijah’s connexion with groups of prophets and particularly with Elisha,
whom he had already designated as his successor (cf. 1 Kings 19:19-21).

Elisha’s request for a double share of Elijah’s spirit is reminiscent of the double
portion of the paternal estate due to the first-born in Israel (cf. Deut 21:17). The
condition that Elijah lays down shows that divine gifts can be passed on only
to those able to receive them (cf. vv. 10-12).

The function of the chariot and horses of fire is to separate the two prophets
when Elijah is being swept up. The book of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus), in its time,
will interpret them as a sign that God has brought him up into heaven (cf. Sir 48:
8-9). Chariots of fire are also a symbol of God’s presence and of his glory, as in
Psalm 68:17, for example. The fact that Elijah had not died is the reason why he
is assigned a role in the future, at the messianic restoration of the twelve tribes
(cf. Sir 48:10) and before the coming of the “day of the Lord” (Mal 4:5). The fi-
gure of Elijah is also to be found in the New Testament where he is identified
with John the Baptist, Christ’s precursor (cf. Mt 11:14, 17:10-12), in the sense
that the Baptist is inspired by the same spirit as inspired Elijah.

The last wonder worked by Elijah, over the waters of the Jordan (cf. v. 8), again
likens him to Moses (cf. Ex 14:16-21 and notes on 1 Kings 19:1-18). Even the
place where Elijah is taken up into heaven is not far from where Moses died (cf.
Deut 34:4-6) before the people entered the promised land. These similarities be-
tween Moses and Elijah suggest certain parallels: Moses represents the Law
which God gave Israel through his mediation; Elijah represents the prophetical
spirit which God manifested through the prophet’s life and through his being ta-
ken up into heaven. So, it is not surprising that when our Lord chose to reveal
his glory to the disciples by his transformation on Mount Tabor, he should have
chosen to appear alongside Moses and Elijah, because the Law and the Pro-
phets find their fulfilment in Christ (cf. Mt 17:3 and par.).

2:13-18. The mantle symbolizes the authority of its owner and, in this case, the
fact that he possesses the prophetical spirit (cf. 1 Kings 19:19-21). Elisha uses
it to repeat the prodigy previously worked by Elijah; but now he does so to cross
towards the land of Israel, as the people once did on the orders of Joshua (cf.
Josh 3:14-17).

On witnessing the prodigy worked by Elisha, the prophets acknowledge him as
Elijah’s true heir (v. 15); but they want to make sure that it was not to some o-
ther place on earth that Elijah was taken, as popular thinking had it (cf. 1 Kings
18:12).

Reading 1 2 Kgs 2:1, 6-14

When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind,
he and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.
Elijah said to Elisha, "Please stay here;
the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan."
"As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live,
I will not leave you," Elisha replied.
And so the two went on together.
Fifty of the guild prophets followed and
when the two stopped at the Jordan,
they stood facing them at a distance.
Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up
and struck the water, which divided,
and both crossed over on dry ground.

When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha,
"Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you."
Elisha answered, "May I receive a double portion of your spirit."
"You have asked something that is not easy," Elijah replied.
"Still, if you see me taken up from you,
your wish will be granted; otherwise not."
As they walked on conversing,
a flaming chariot and flaming horses came between them,
and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
When Elisha saw it happen he cried out,
"My father! my father! Israel's chariots and drivers!"
But when he could no longer see him,
Elisha gripped his own garment and tore it in two.

Then he picked up Elijah's mantle that had fallen from him,

An Upright Intention in Almsgiving, Prayer and Fasting

[Jesus said to His disciples,] [1] “Beware of practising your piety before men in
order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who
is in Heaven.

[2] “Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Tru-
ly, I say to you, they have their reward. [3] But when you give alms, do not let
your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your alms may be
in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

[5] “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to
stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be
seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. [6] But when you pray,

Commentary:

1-18. “Piety”, here, means good works (cf. note on Matthew 5:6). Our Lord is
indicating the kind of spirit in which we should do acts of personal piety. Alms-
giving, fasting and prayer were the basic forms taken by personal piety among
the chosen people—which is why Jesus refers to these three subjects. With com-
plete authority He teaches that true piety must be practiced with an upright inten-
tion, in the presence of God and without any ostentation. Piety practiced in this
way implies exercising our faith in God who sees us—and also in the safe know-
ledge that He will reward those who are sincerely devout.

5-6. Following the teaching of Jesus, the Church has always taught us to pray
even when we were infants. By saying “you” (singular) our Lord is stating quite
unequivocally the need for personal prayer—relating as child to Father, alone
with God.

Public prayer, for which Christ’s faithful assemble together, is something neces-
sary and holy; but it should never displace obedience to this clear commandment
of our Lord: “When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to
your Father”.

The Second Vatican Council reminds us of the teaching and practice of the
Church in its liturgy, which is “the summit toward which the activity of the Church
is directed; it is also the fount from which all her power flows [...]. The spiritual
life, however, is not limited solely to participation in the liturgy. The Christian is
indeed called to pray with others, but he must also enter into his bedroom to pray
to his Father in secret; furthermore, according to the teaching of the Apostle, he
must pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)” (”Sacrosanctum Concilium”,
10 and 12).

A soul who really puts his Christian faith into practice realizes that he needs fre-
quently to get away and pray alone to his Father, God. Jesus, who gives us this
teaching about prayer, practiced it during His own life on earth: the holy Gospel
reports that He often went apart to pray on His own: “At times He spent the
whole night in an intimate conversation with His Father. The Apostles were filled
with love when they saw Christ pray” (St. J. Escriva, “Christ Is Passing By”, 119;
cf. Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16; etc.). The Apostles followed the Mas-
ter’s example, and so we see Peter going up to the rooftop of the house to pray
in private, and receiving a revelation (cf. Acts 10:9-16). “Our life of prayer should
also be based on some moments that are dedicated exclusively to our conversa-
tion with God, moments of silent dialogue” (”ibid”, 119).

16-18. Starting from the traditional practice of fasting, our Lord tells us the spirit
in which we should exercise mortification of our senses: we should do so without
ostentation, avoiding praise, discreetly; that way Jesus’ words will not apply to
us: “they have their reward”; it would have been a very bad deal. “The world ad-
mires only spectacular sacrifice, because it does not realize the value of sacri-
fice that is hidden and silent” (St. J. Escriva, “The Way”, 185).

Following are the Prayers after Low Mass which were prescribed by Pope Leo XIII who composed the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, and were reinforced by Pope Pius XI and Pope Pius XII to pray for the conversion of Russia. These prayers were in effect until after Vatican II. A decade later Paul VI said, "satan has entered the sanctuary." Could the elimination of these powerful prayers with a ten year indulgence have played a huge part in allowing the devil such easy access? The answer is obvious. Below the normal Leonine Prayers is the longer version of the Prayer to St. Michael, composed by His Excellency Pope Leo XIII to defend against The Great Apostasy.

Complete Prayer to Saint Michael
The following is the longer version of the vital prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 after his startling vision as to the future of the Church. This prayer was dedicated for the Feast of St. Michael 1448 years from the date of the election of the first Leo - Pope Saint Leo the Great. Everyone is familiar with the first prayer below which was mandated by His Holiness as part of the Leonine Prayers after Low Mass. After Vatican II, in legion with the devil Giovanni Montini outlawed this necessary prayer and then one wonders how "the smoke of satan" got into the sanctuary? The conciliarists wanted to make sure the words in bold below would never see the light of day again for in it Leo foretold what would happen: The shepherd would be struck, the sheep scattered. Below are both the short and longer versions of this poignant prayer which should never be forgotten.

    Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. June Devotion: The Sacred Heart

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of June is set apart for devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. "From among all the proofs of the infinite goodness of our Savior none stands out more prominently than the fact that, as the love of the faithful grew cold, He, Divine Love Itself, gave Himself to us to be honored by a very special devotion and that the rich treasury of the Church was thrown wide open in the interests of that devotion." These words of Pope Pius XI refer to the Sacred Heart Devotion, which in its present form dates from the revelations given to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673-75.

The devotion consists in the divine worship of the human heart of Christ, which is united to His divinity and which is a symbol of His love for us. The aim of the devotion is to make our Lord king over our hearts by prompting them to return love to Him (especially through an act of consecration by which we offer to the Heart of Jesus both ourselves and all that belongs to us) and to make reparation for our ingratitude to God.

PRAYER TO THE SACRED HEART

Devotion to the Sacred Heart was the characteristic note of the piety of Saint Gertrude the Great (1256-1302), Benedictine nun and renowned mystic. She was, in fact, the first great exponent of devotion to the Sacred Heart. In our efforts to honor the Heart of Jesus we have this prayer as a model for our own:
Hail! O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and quickening source of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, and burning furnace of divine love. Gideon conquers with a smaller army

All Midian and Amalek and the Kedemites mustered and crossed over into the valley of Jezreel, where they encamped. The spirit of the Lord enveloped Gideon; he blew the horn that summoned Abiezer to follow him. He sent messengers, too, throughout Manasseh, which also obeyed his summons; through Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, likewise, he sent messengers and these tribes advanced to meet the others.

Gideon said to God, ìIf indeed you are going to save Israel through me, as you promised, I am putting this woolen fleece on the threshing floor. If dew comes on the fleece alone, while all the ground is dry, I shall know that you will save Israel through me, as you promised.î That is what took place. Early the next morning he wrung the dew from the fleece, squeezing out of it a bowlful of water. Gideon then said to God, ìDo not be angry with me if I speak once more. Let me make just one more test with the fleece. Let the fleece alone be dry, but let there be dew on all the ground.î That night God did so; the fleece alone was dry, but there was dew on all the ground.

Early the next morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) encamped by En-harod with all his soldiers. The camp of Midian was in the valley north of Gibeath-hammoreh. The Lord said to Gideon, ìYou have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, ëMy own power brought me the victory.í Now proclaim to all the soldiers, ëIf anyone is afraid or fearful, let him leave.íî When Gideon put them to this test on the mountain, twenty-two thousand of the soldiers left, but ten thousand remained. The Lord said to Gideon, ìThere are still too many soldiers. Lead them down to the water and I will test them for you there. If I tell you that a certain man is to go with you, he must go with you. But no one is to go if I tell you he must not.î When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the Lord said to him, ìYou shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink.î Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water.

The Lord said to Gideon, ìBy means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home.î Their horns, and such supplies as the soldiers had with them, were taken up, and Gideon ordered the rest of the Israelites to their tents, but kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and provided them all with horns and with empty jars and torches inside the jars. ìWatch me and follow my lead,î he told them. ìI shall go to the edge of the camp, and as I do, you must do also. When I and those with me blow horns, you too must blow horns all around the camp and cry out, ëFor the Lord and for Gideon!íî

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the posting of the guards. They blew the horns and broke the jars they were holding. All three companies blew horns and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hands, and in their right the horns they were blowing, and cried out, ìA sword for the Lord and Gideon!î They all remained standing in place around the camp, while the whole camp fell to running and shouting and fleeing. But the three hundred men kept blowing the horns, and throughout the camp the Lord set the sword of one against another.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done

The prayer continues: Your kingdom come. We pray that Godís kingdom will become present for us in the same way that we ask for his name to be hallowed among us. For when does God not reign, when could there be in him a beginning of what always was and what will never cease to be? What we pray for is that the kingdom promised to us by God will come, the kingdom won by Christís blood and passion. Then we who formerly were slaves in this world will reign from now on under the dominion of Christ, in accordance with his promise: Come, O blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom which was prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

However, my dear friends, it could also be that the kingdom of God whose coming we daily wish for is Christ himself, since it is his coming that we long for. He is our resurrection, since we rise again in him; so too he can be thought of as the kingdom of God because we are to reign in him. And it is good that we pray for Godís kingdom; for though it is a heavenly kingdom, it is also an earthly one. But those who have already renounced the world are made greater by holding positions of authority in that kingdom.

After this we add: Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven; we pray not that God should do his will, but that we may carry out his will. How could anyone prevent the Lord from doing what he wills? But in our prayer we ask that Godís will be done in us, because the devil throws up obstacles to prevent our mind and our conduct from obeying God in all things. So if his will is to be done in us we have need of his will, that is, his help and protection. No one can be strong by his own strength or secure save by Godís mercy and forgiveness. Even the Lord, to show the weakness of the human nature which he bore, said: Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, and then, by way of giving example to his disciples that they should do Godís will and not their own, he added: Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.

All Christ did, all he taught, was the will of God. Humility in our daily lives, an unwavering faith, a moral sense of modesty in conversion, justice in acts, mercy in deed, discipline, refusal to harm others, a readiness to suffer harm, peaceableness with our brothers, a wholehearted love of the Lord, loving in him what is of the Father, fearing him because he is God, preferring nothing to him who preferred nothing to us, clinging tenaciously to his love, standing by his cross with loyalty and courage whenever there is any conflict involving his honor and his name, manifesting in our speech the constancy of our profession and under torture confidence for the fight, and in dying the endurance for which we will be crownedóthis is what it means to wish to be a coheir with Christ, to keep Godís command; this is what it means to do the will of the Father.
