Close but no cigar.
The last thing the Church needs is more scandal caused by heretical religious and clergy, lavender shirtlifters and weak bishops. Scandal is not the same as "controversy".
Controversy is not necessarily a bad thing, provided it arises from the Church defending its own teachings and confronting the powers of darkness, such as the current controversy caused by Obama and his political thugs. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that they Church needs this sort of controversy. It needs to be persecuted and tested for the sake of its own vitality.
“...may have fostered a perception the church is inhospitable to women.”
No, those who are engaged in impropriety are the ones trying to hide behind accusations of the the “church being inhospitable to women.” It is their impropriety that is in question, not their gender.
“Mr. Travon T. Tyrone has been arrested for armed robbery while attempting to hold up a liquor store. He has 10 prior convictions for armed robbery of the same liquor store. When asked if he thought this arrest was ‘fair’, by a reporter, he responded that ‘It just prove(sic) that the police are racists.’”
Doesn’t the good Cardinal remember that this happened to the seminaries when they were empty?
After the seminaries were cleaned out and a good screening put in place for those desiring to become priest, the seminaries are now bursting at the seams.
Please remember, Cardinal O’Malley in your prayers.

Problem is that “scandal” and “controversies”, has sadly, become “one and the same” word.
Why don’t the bishops just publicize the top 10 worst examples of what the women religious have said, so people can understand what the problem is? Then say that not every women religious has gotten off track like this, but we are dealing with those that are.
And don’t say that you are afraid to give the impression that the Church is anti-women. Point to the courageous, holy women in the past who have (figuratively) slapped errant church leaders upside the head when they went wrong, and say that you are cleaning house with the same spirit, and in honor of those women who were righteous.
A few weeks ago, I saw a woman who was always at Daily Mass. I was so happy to see her since it’s been a good year since I had seen her at Mass. I told her I missed her, asked where she had been, or if she had gotten a new job or something. She said no, she was just sick and tired of the church’s politics. She said she was upset when they put out the first letter on Obamacare and “now that they’ve gone after the nuns,” she isn’t going to church anymore! I was appalled because I always thought that anyone who went to Daily Mass must have a pretty good grasp on the church’s teachings, but apparently not!
