Catholic College Cans Kennedy Speech, Blames Bishop

BOSTON (Reuters) - A small Massachusetts Roman Catholic college rescinded its invitation to Vicki Kennedy to speak at its graduation ceremony this spring, saying the local bishop objected to honoring the widow of the liberal lion Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

A spokesman for Worcester Bishop Robert McManus declined to say why exactly he objected to the choice of Kennedy, a member of the most prominent U.S. Catholic family in politics.

"Bishop McManus is acting, he feels, consistently with what all of the U.S. bishops asked colleges or higher institutions to do going back to 2004, that they not honor ... Catholics who take a public stance or position on issues contrary to things that the Church is trying to teach," said Raymond Delisle, a spokesman for the diocese.

Kennedy said she was "disheartened" by the public rebuke.

"I am a lifelong Catholic and my faith is very important to me," she said in a statement. "I have not met Bishop McManus nor has he been willing to meet with me to discuss his objections."

She said that by opposing her appearance at the college, the bishop "has made a judgment about my worthiness as a Catholic."

Senator Kennedy, a Democrat, was a liberal standard-bearer during his nearly 47 years in office and an advocate for abortion rights -- a stance that ran afoul of church teachings. His brother John F. Kennedy, the first Catholic president of the United States, was assassinated in 1963.

The school, Anna Maria College of Paxton, Massachusetts, apologized to Kennedy.

"Worthiness"? Worthiness for what? None of us are "worthy". We're all sinners.

This is not about "worthiness". It's about giving scandal. It's about rebuking Catholics in the public square who actively and intentionally work to undermine longstanding Catholic teaching.

Anyone who came within five feet of dead Ted (his brain died years ahead of his fat, putrid body) was infected with slime and should be quarrentined immediately.

That Kennedy line represents regressive evolution.

Really? First I'd heard.

It is time for the hierarchy to awaken. Their sleepiness has brought scandal now so severe and conditioned as to make the Church teaching look faulty and scandal appear mainstream and with merit.

Who said, “ the time will come when good shall be called evil, and evil, good”?

I pray to meet that man. ;)

Yes, he has and it appears she came up on the short end.

I'm with you. She, of all people, know all the scandals and all about the shame of scandal...probably a WHOLE lot more that we peasants never heard about.

KUDOS to Worcester Bishop Robert McManus.
Yet ANOTHER American bishop DOING HIS JOB.

psst!.. don't you realize history; began w/ the O'Bozo dicatorship in the liberals' fragile minds,
much of everything else prior to 1960 is irrelevant; after 1964, the Communists took over the
(formerly Pro-American) Democrat Party.

Well, Victoria, since you and the swimmer were married in a civil ceremony and not in the Church, you were just fornicating - thumbing your nose at the Sixth Commandment. Sounds like you yourself don't find your faith worthy of obedience.

In addition, the Church does not recognize the divorce of Reggie from Grier C. Raclin. She and the swimmer were adulterers, plain and simple.

It's not your worthiness, Vickie, it's what your witness would be to the students at a Catholic College. If you publicly REJECT Catholic teaching, you have no business being honored by a Catholic College. Bishop McManus must have had some information about statements you've made in the past which might reflect your adherence, or lack thereof, to the teachings of Jesus and His Church.
