BOSTON (BP) -- Last week, the student senate at Northeastern University, in Boston, voted to end negotiations to bring fast-food chain Chick-fil-A to campus after students protested over the company's affiliation with several Christian organizations the students say have an "anti-gay" agenda.
The Atlanta-based company, dogged for months by accusations of homophobia, insists it is "not anti-anybody" but instead simply wants to "graciously serve great food and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A."
But students from at least 10 campuses aren't buying it. Incensed over the company's Christian values, they opposed new franchises and lobbied for the removal of existing restaurants on campuses across the country. Although the furor has generated a lot of media attention, prompting the company's president to publicly defend its philanthropic affiliations, it's not likely to hurt Chick-fil-A's bottom line. With about 1,540 restaurants in 38 states and annual sales figures topping $3 billion, the company still has plenty of fans.
At Northeastern, the student body eagerly embraced Chick-fil-A's proposal to become a vendor in the student center, until a small group of students complained about the organizations to which the company contributes through its WinShape Foundation. Led by Senior Taylor Cotter, a member of the school's' student senate who spent almost a year opposing the company's interest in coming to campus, the students circulated a petition and gathered 300 signatures -- about 1.5 percent of the student body. Despite the relatively small opposition, the school's student government quickly voted to end negotiations with the company.
School administrators supported the decision, saying the company's principles contradicted Northeastern's respect for diversity and support for the gay community: "We are proud of the decision that affirms our university's commitment to be an inclusive, diverse community that is respectful of all," college spokeswoman.........

We ate McDonalds last night because the wife wanted a Big Mac, the first time in a long time. We eat at Chick Fil-A two to three times per week.
Not only is there a better quality of employees and food at Chick-Fil-A but there is just a better quality of customers who eat a Chick-Fil-A.
I’ve never eaten at one of their restaurants. I may just have to start visiting them to show my support.
Your post stated that you thought there was such as thing as people who were afraid of being around homosexuals and were therefore homophobic.
My post simply stated that the only homophobes I have ever experienced were homosexuals who were afraid to admit their homosexuality and therefore referred to themselves as "gay."
In fact, someone who can't stand to be around homosexuals, might just be exhibiting a revulsion rather than a phobia.
Indeed. Liberalism is truly, as Michael Savage says, a mental disorder.
Man...if I was going to Northeastern and I was FINALLY going to get some Chick-Fil-A on campus only to be thwarted by the student senate over stupid philosophical differences, I’d go ape-$%^& on them.
I don’t think, I know people that are afraid to be around homosexuals. I am not sure why. I don’t know if they are afraid it is contagious or afraid that their own reputation will suffer or what but it is irrational.
I also think that it isn’t just fear but hatred would also fall under the category. I certainly hate that some homosexuals are loud and obnoxious and in your face with their lifestyle. However, I don’t know any personally that are like that.
It’s like racism. There are people that hate other people because of the color of their skin and would harm someone because of it. I have no idea why. I like or don’t like people based on who they are not a group that they belong to. That would include homosexuals. I certainly don’t approve of their lifestyle but that doesn’t mean that I hate them personally because they are homosexuals. I DO hate what the homosexual agenda is doing to our country though.
“annual sales figures topping $3 billion, “
And closed on Sundays too!
Everything is politics to liberals - even fast food. Sounds like Chik-Fil-A would be better off building somewhere where grown-ups live.
We should encourage everyone who wants to boycott Chick-Fil-A to just make it a point never to eat there on a Sunday.
Maybe they can then force Chick-Fil-A to close on Sundays.
The Chick-fil-a in our area is closed on Sundays. I thought they all were.
No work Sunday actually makes great sense for managing time off for employees. It’s all the same day. No hassle scheduling.
They all are...it's company policy. That's why I didn't add a wink to my original post.
If they HATE Christians because they perceive Christians as 'hating' sodomites, then they are no better than those they accuse of intolerance.
Liberals and marxists get their panties in a bunch because somebody somewhere might be doing or saying something THEY don’t approve of...
Conservatives to liberals: "Don't like Chick-Fil-A? Don't eat there."
...except Christians.
That boycott sure worked fast. The libs forced Chick-fil-a to close down all their stores one day a week. :-)
That'll teach 'em.
Rush’s “new castrati” would have their way with you such that a shirt change from the emitted spittle would be mandatory.
If you all don’t put the smiley faces in, then you must realize that some of us (me included) are too straight-forward and a bit too dense to get it.
Here I’m taking you seriously!
I prefer money over apologies. :>) (note smiley face but feel free to send money anyway.)
Apologies, FRiend, but I had to take out a second job to pay for replacement keyboards. One would think I would have learned my lesson by now: never drink while FReeping.
Thank you for your kind words, NHN, and sense of humor.
It’s welcome these days when the serious overwhelms.
Thank you for your service.
