Reverend ONeal Dozier, an African American Rick Santorum supporter from Florida, held a press conference Sunday calling upon Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to renounce his Mormon religion.
Mr. Doziers request is regarding several racially motivated passages in the Book of Mormon, that have been called out by other African American leaders previously in the race.
One verse in the Book of Mormon discusses the cursing the black African people, and Mr. Dozier also notes that their are prejudiced passages against Jews and Native Americans as well.
Romneys nomination would cause the erroneous view that has long existed in the minds of black people, that the Republican Party is prejudice to become a reality. Also, if Romney gets the nomination, President Obamas super pacs will educate the American people about his racist religion and he will probably lose to Obama, said Mr. Dozier in a press release.
Earlier in the primary race, Mr. Santorum made a campaign appearance at Pompano Beachs WorldWide Christian Center, where Mr. Dozier is the lead pastor.
During the week leading up to the Florida Republican primary election, Mr. Dozier told The Palm Beach Post that the American people will not vote for a Mormon to be president of the United States.
Mr. Romneys religion has had little impact on the primary race thus far. In states with large populations of Mormon voters, he has received the largest percentage of votes from Mormons. Thus, one could conclude his religion has been an advantage.
However, other religious figures have also criticized Mr. Romney for the passages in the Book of Mormon.
In January, Dr. Obery Hendricks a professor of Biblical Interpretation at the New York Theological Seminary, wrote an op-ed article in The Huffington Post making similar accusations against Mr. Romney.
What concerns me is this: the Book of Mormon, the book that Mitt Romney and all Mormons embrace as divinely revealed scripture that is more sacred, more true, and more inerrant than any other holy book on earth, declares that black people are cursed, said Mr. Hendricks in an MSNBC interview.
Mr. Romney has been the lone candidate not accused of making racist remarks against African American candidates in the race thus far though.
In contrast, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Mr. Santorum himself were issued open letters by the NAACP calling for them to retract statements associating African Americans with government welfare programs.
Furthermore, Mr. Romneys father, former Michigan Governor George Romney, was known as a vocal supporter of civil rights for African Americans.
Mr. Romney has not responded publicly to either Reverend Dozier or Mr. Hendricks comments about the racially charged Book of Mormon.
Going forward in the race, the Mormon factor will likely remain a resurfacing issue for Mr. Romney, especially if he wins the nomination and faces the nations first African American president.
First there is no mormon hate, it is loathing of mormonism.
Romney is who he is because of his mormonism not in spite of it.
Sorry, lds voted for Romney last election cycle at 94%, this election cycle 98%.
My lds family is supporting him because he is lds and they beleive he is going fulfill some prophecy.
Because someone might not like them is not entering their decision to support Romney fully.
ALL: Notice the qualifier this Mormon puts into her apologetic of racism in the Book of Mormon. Given that Supposed South & Central America didn't have any "Africans" present (well, they didn't have any Jews present either, despite BoM Claims--but that's another issue), MissesBush knows she's on relatively "safe" ground making this claim.
But it's like MissesBush misses the forest thru the trees.
Somehow, she just doesn't understand how somebody reading the Book of Mormon -- and seeing that it condemns the "blackness" of skin -- might somehow conclude that the Mormon god is into condemning black skin color...nevermind that it's a Native American or whoever!
So, sorry...MissesBush...nice try...but I've already highlighted the given Book of Mormon passages in post #1:
Try as you might, your pin doesn't erase this phrase in 2 Nephi 5:21: ...the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them."
And Alma 3:6 claims: And the skins of the Lamanites were DARK, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which WAS A CURSE upon them.
The peoples with the dark skinned are the Lamanites, a people of Hebrewic origin, not African origin
Then, please, MissesBush, go on...tell us all...how is it that whatever skin color you want to assign to these Native Americans -- how is it that their skin color is cursed -- and white is so "delightsome"? (pre-1981 Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 30:6)
Ignoring Africans and African-Americans for the moment, and concentrating only upon Native Americans, please explain this verse for us: "And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites." (3 Nephi 2:15)
Tell us, book of mormon-believing MissesBush...how is "white skin" a curseless skin?
We're waiting...
Perhaps you would get farther with what you're trying to do by laying off his religion, and post Romneys liberal political leanings instead.
But somehow, you miss applying this SAME LOGIC in reverse, eh?
What do I mean?
Well, imagine a local candidate is going door to door.
Not knowing anything about him, you invite him in, & you have a long discussion.
Somehow, you eventually get into religion & he says of your given faith:
(1) That 100% of your creeds are an "abomination"
(2) That ALL of your professing believers are "corrupt"
(3) That ALL of spiritual forefathers going back 1800 years or so were apostates
(4) He also implies that your church is a false & dead one
(5) He claims all churches not connected to His are part of "the second church." You ask him what that means...and he basically says, there's two churches...the church of the Lamb (his church) & the church of the devil (your church)
Tell us, Suz, is this going to inspire you to vote for this man?
Well, the 5 things above are ALL in Mormon "scripture" about ALL Christian sects...
Numbers 1 & 2 can be Googled under "Joseph Smith - History" "Pearl of Great Price" verses 18-19
Number 4 is Lds "Doctrine & Covenant" 1:30 -- Google that too
Number 5 is 1 Nephi 14:9-10 in the Book of Mormon (I have other references which show Mormon leaders applying this passage to the worldwide Christian church)
Number 3 has numerous references...Mormons believe in a "universal apostasy"
Seems to me, Suz, that if 75% of this country has a Christian affiliation...not sure why you're obsessing with the .08% of the population when what Romney believes is enough to chase away 75% of the population!!!
OK, after numerous personal posts to me from you, I get it. You hate me.
You probably hated me before I existed.
Perhaps you would get farther with what you're trying to do by laying off his religion, and post Romneys liberal political leanings instead.
Perhaps you would get further, NavyCanDo, with your feedback by laying off of my religious convictions, and post Romney's liberal political leanings instead.
(Doncha just love it when people refute their own arguments???)
Romney already has 94%-98% of the lds vote.
No worries then. Bash away. Who needs that extra 2-5%. Why sell your candidate on the issues.
Hey, bash everyone. YAY!
Navy, Navy, Navy.....Colofornian does not post anti-mormon threads, they post anti-mormonism threads - try and keep up.
Romney is a liberal because his belief is mormonism.
Romney is who he is because of this momonism not in spite of it.
I suggest you learn about mormonism before dismissing it.
Really? What wonderful logic on your part.
Romney is a liberal, no one who is actually a conservative and with a brain would be voting for him.
Romney is a liberal because of his mormonism not in spite of it, if you want to support Romney be my guest but come on don’t pretend it is because there are those exposing mormonISM for what it is.

Sorry that will never happen...
Without his Mormon religion bishop and high priest Willard Mitt Romney is nothing...
He has no identity outside what Mormonism gives him...
Hede be “lost” without it...
Its all he knows...
all he thinks he can be sure of, rely on...
Mormons dont say “I believe God to be true”
They say “I believe the “church” is true”
“I believe the book of Mormon is true”
The Mormon religion controls every waking moment of Willie Mittys life..
Hes not free to make his own decisions..
and he wouldnt be comfortable without it..
Hes been trained from the cradle to “need” it..
When he says “I’m proud of my Mormon faith” and “I believe in the faith of my fathers” its because thats all he knows or wants to know..
Hes afraid to look outside of what his ggg grandfather believed and practiced..
Hes stunted in his religion...hes never grown on past the need for what it gives him...
to it he “owes” his education, his wife, his family’s success, his fortune, his job, his MASS gov win, his present campaign..
The Romney family for generations have been “royal” Mormons
Break out ???
No Willie Mitty doesnt have it in him to do that..
It takes guts and a desire to be free to attempt to break the shackles of Mormonism...
We have several courageous FReepers who have escaped the tentacles of Mormonism but it cost them to do so...
bishop Willie Mitty doesnt have the strength of character or the independance to do the same...
Hes never had to stand on his own 2 feet ...
and hes not planning to any time soon..
I fully realize that Romney’s Mormonism is a liability in the general election. But for other Republicans to go after him for itespecially religious figuresjust makes the GOP look like it’s engaging in petty internecine holy wars.

There is a constructive way to raise the issue, but this isn’t it IMO.
Just speakin’ the truth. I know mormons who voted for romney BECAUSE of the bashing.
Sorry. That’s just the way it is. If supporters spent more time wooing the mormons than bashing their religion, that 95% could be moved a lot.
But bashing is more fun. right?
While you’re at it, the jews are voting for obama en masse. Bash them while you’re at it. Oh wait... people are wooing them... aaaahhhh... what a concept.
Bashing doesn’t work. Speak to the people with respect on the issues and you might have a lot of voters.
95%... I think that is a stat pulled out of the air.

WAY ahead of the Christian Bible..
Sigh.
Really?
Even if you don't think so, Dems & especially United Church of Christ members wouldn't agree with you...
And overall in the media -- to use your exact same standards -- it wouldn't "wear well..."
I think the jury's in: You're a two-faced hypocrite on this issue...
Of course, if you want to continue "Clintonian" on us and start parsing what a Mormon says in a message is "religion" and what a United Church of Christ pastor says in a sermon isn't religion...
Sigh.
I mean c'mon...
Did I really have to utterly waste a few minutes of my life even responding to such claptrap.
Answer: Yes...but no more for you...Either you're hypocrisy has too much control over you, or you just can't think straight.
