Wars kill off lots of the inconvenient young men. Some of them bring back wives from the foreigners and some even bring back female slaves to be sold to the rich old men who start the wars.

Monogamy is by definition democratic. Polygamy and "sexual freedom" are by definition aristocratic.
Hot young women and rich men (young or old) are the winners in the sexual free market. "Free love" statistically means these two groups will have a higher percentage of sex with each other.
Non-rich men and non-hot women are not wanted.
This is of course to a considerable extent their own fault, as the non-rich men want only hot women and the non-hot women only want rich men.
