The Cure for Election Madness: How to be political without losing your soul.

Mark DeMoss, concerned about the increasingly harsh tone of public discourse, launched the Civility Project in January 2009. The Republican businessman and political adviser enlisted Democratic lobbyist and former Clinton aide Lanny Davis to help him. Together the two friends wrote to all 100 United States Senators, all 435 members of the House of Representatives, and all 50 state governors, asking each to sign a pledge promising, "I will be civil in my public discourse and behavior. I will be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them. I will stand against incivility when I see it."

How many of the 585 recipients agreed?

Three.

Civility has all but disappeared in political discourse. The vitriol, often irrational and unfounded, of many comments on this forum are a good example. It is much easier to call people names than to familiarize oneself with issues and discuss them rationally. (I am not disparaging FR, I've been guilty, too.)

However, calls to civility can sometimes be interpreted as a call to stifle passionate belief and the bold expression of that belief. Is moderation in political expression always called for? When does self-control result in lukewarmness? Is it possible to retain that passion and yet maintain respect for those who disagree?

These are important questions, and given the growing potential for cultural chaos and even violence surrounding elections as the electorate becomes more and more divided, it is worth consideration. The article is long but a good read.

—Civility has all but disappeared in political discourse.—

That is because after almost 250 years it is reaching a head.

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

Civility went out the door a long time ago. Civility these days is just a code-word for political correctness.

Now that all things and persons DemocRat have become reprehensible to the majority of Americans, we need the Republicans to stop talking about it.

I read all six pages. On page 7, the author recommends use of factcheck.org, and snopes.com to check political claims. No thanks.

Political Correctness is Cultural Marxism and is prominent now because it took control over the children’s formation of worldview— (one way to think—BF SKINNER techniques—to force the Marxist worldview).

Brainwashing children into that Marxist mindset for decades using Multiculturalism, Tolerance, Feminism, Unions, Howard Zinn, billy ayers curricula, to destroy the Judeo/Christian Ethics which was prevalent up until the Marxists took complete over in the 60’s of all media and Universities and over all public school curricula with Jimmy Carter’s help.

We are no longer civil because they are destroying the Christian paradigm. They are doing it by making the Bible “Hate Speech” now and the Christian ideas of the family as “old fashioned” and intolerant. The idea of Truth is being intentionally destroyed-—No Objective Truth.

They are removing the Rule of Law-—the idea of Truth-—which is like playing a basketball game with everyone making up their own rules. We will just get fights and arguments-—and the game will never get anywhere.

Marxist strategy to destroy America from within. We need to get back to Rule of Law—Just Laws and the idea of God’s Standard of Right and Wrong-—which everyone agreed with for hundreds of years. It is the framework of our Constitution.

You can not be unified if your basic belief system is different-—it is why immigration and multiculturalism was so prevalent for decades—to destroy cultural unity and Christianity which is the root of individualism and dignity and worth of every one. Marxists want to make slaves of everyone and eliminate those whom they deem unworthy of life.

To be fair, they can be a good starting place.
