The question is why they felt they had to second-guess Jesus to begin with. He picked 12 knowing that 1 was going to betray him. It didn't follow that anyone had to be chosen to replace Judas. 11 would have been just fine; after all, it was fine enough for Jesus. Besides, they had already become known as The Eleven. Casting lots to choose between two candidates selected is going to have to pick one or the other. Making the roll of a die equivalent to a choice made by Jesus after a night of deliberation is pretty insulting. Typical human thing to do, though, like turning Bible pages and random and then sticking a pin to see what verse it lands on to divine what God wants you to know that day.

Mr Rogers knows better than St. Peter. If Mr Rogers would have been there, this mistake never would have happened. Mr Rogers also knows better than all the Fathers and Doctors who believed in Apostolic succession.
