LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy — For the second time in a week, Pope Benedict XVI has corrected what he says are erroneous interpretations of the Second Vatican Council, reasserting the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church and saying other Christian communities were either defective or not true churches.

Do people in heaven live in time and space?

Your church would appear to believe purgatory to be subject to time and therefore space, since praying for the souls believed to be held in purgatory is encouraged, praying to shorten their time there (but not to affect their salvation), or so I've been informed here on FR.

So, if the concept of purgatory is subject to time and space, but God is not, does this pose any particular difficulty for the concept of purgatory, theologically?

Apostolic Christianity is the mainstream of Christianity, both historically and numerically.

Between Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism, Apostolic Christians represent 1.4 billion of the world’s 2 billion Christians.

The Catholic definition of Church means having a valid priesthood and valid sacraments. That means only the Orthodox are true Churches based on the definition of St. Ignatius of Antioch from 105 A.D.

So much for ONE Catholic church.

How's that unity thing working out for you guys? I'll bet the folks in Rome aren't too happy with your assessment of the situation.

You are talking with the wrong person about purgatory.

Mathew 23:9?

There is only one Holy Father. Priest, Bishop, Cardinal, and Pope He has never been.

So do you think they were acting infallibly then or are they acting infallibly now? Or maybe God changed His mind?

Infallibly is confined to solemn definitions of revelation from scripture and the Apostles. Infallibly cannot be invoked to contradict previous infallible definitions.

Because as we find all throughout the Bible, a popular religion is the TRUE religion, right?

That RECOGNIZED them - note that Stephen was described as “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit”. And then they laid hands on them, placing them in the office of deacon.

NOT priest, since the early church had no priests.

I hate to break it to folks, but there are plenty of bishops and Popes who could NOT be described as “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit”...

So basically you are saying the Pope has fits of infallibility? Or would you call it spurts of infallibility?

However the Japanese might say “well, bless his heart,” they’re thinking it, from the cautiously polite but amused looks on both their faces.

Taking verses out of context is so disingenuous.

Those men were chosen to serve tables and see to the distribution of food. They were not commissioned to be evangelists or preachers but to free up those who WERE evangelists or preachers.

Acts 6 1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

The Orthodox are in schism with the Catholic Church, but remain true Churches because they have retained a valid priesthood and valid sacraments.

Unlike the Protestant bodies that have rejected the sacraments and apostolic succession.

On the other hand, Eberhard Jüngel sees something different there. The fact that in its time the Second Vatican Council did not state that the one and only Church of Christ is exclusively the Roman Catholic Church perplexes Jüngel. In the Constitution Lumen gentium, it says only that the Church of Christ subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the Successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him”, not expressing any exclusivity with the Latin word “subsistit”.

Unfortunately once again I cannot follow the reasoning of my esteemed colleague, Jüngel. I was there at the Second Vatican Council when the term “subsistit” was chosen and I can say I know it well. Regrettably one cannot go into details in an interview. In his Encyclical Pius XII said: the Roman Catholic Church “is” the one Church of Jesus Christ. This seems to express a complete identity, which is why there was no Church outside the Catholic community. However, this is not the case: according to Catholic teaching, which Pius XII obviously also shared, the local Churches of the Eastern Church separated from Rome are authentic local Churches; the communities that sprang from the Reformation are constituted differently, as I just said. In these the Church exists at the moment when the event takes place.

ECCLESIAL COMMUNION AND ECUMENISM

17. “The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honoured by the name of Christian, but who do not however profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter”(72). Among the non-Catholic Churches and Christian communities, there are indeed to be found many elements of the Church of Christ, which allow us, amid joy and hope, to acknowledge the existence of a certain communion, albeit imperfect(73).

This communion exists especially with the Eastern orthodox Churches, which, though separated from the See of Peter, remain united to the Catholic Church by means of very close bonds, such as the apostolic succession and a valid Eucharist, and therefore merit the title of particular Churches(74). Indeed, “through the celebration of the Eucharist of the Lord in each of these Churches, the Church of God is built up and grows in stature”(75), for in every valid celebration of the Eucharist the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church becomes truly present(76).

Because as we find all throughout the Bible, a popular religion is the TRUE religion, right?

What we find in the Bible is that the TRUE religion must be historically grounded. In other words, spiritual truth is not distinct from historical (or any other kind of) truth.

Correct. Which is why appeals to “1.4 billion Catholics” are irrelevant. Popularity means nothing in terms of what is or is not a “real” church.

Remember that broom fight that broke out in Bethlehem among the different monk sects? That’s their future “unity”. “Bring your broom and get ready to rumble. We’re unifying here.”
