Somewhere I have a very nice letter from that author in response to one I sent him on the subject of modern translations and why some people shy away from them. Bruce Metzger's The Text of the New Testament, Its Transmission, Corruption, and Restoration, 4th ed. is quite good.

I know a few Catholic U. PhDs in scripture who are quite orthodox. They swear by the RSV Catholic edition.
