It doesn't help that "apocalypse" has taken on a certain, limited meaning of sudden disaster that is not its only, or primary meaning. We are in the middle of it all.

All those prophecies about the Messiah coming to Israel were foretelling of the apocalypse, God's uncovering of his plan for the world:

The first act of the apocalypse was when God was born into the human race through Mary, revealing himself in human flesh, as John said of Jesus, full of grace and truth, revealing, as Jesus said to Philip, through his own words and actions, the formerly unseen and unknown Father.

The middle act of the apocalypse was Jesus raising himself from the dead, revealing his mastery over death and the grave, the blessedness, as he said to Thomas, of those who, having not seen, still believe, and the hope we have in the meantime while we await his return.

The final act of the apocalypse will be the return of Jesus to earth to set everything right, revealing his lordship over all people and authorities, regardless of their disbelief and rebellion, and to initiate, starting with the believers' resurrection or transformation, the beginning of the new heavens and new earth, revealing his supremacy over all things, even creation itself.

With that, the apocalypse will be complete.
