From the Lds church-owned Deseret News article:
'Is Mormonism Christian?' is a very important question," writes Matt Slick of...Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry. "The answer is equally important and simple. No. Mormonism is not Christian. "If you are a Mormon," Slick adds, "please realize that CARM is not trying to attack you, your character or the sincerity of your belief." For a variety of reasons that Slick explains in his paper, "the Mormon is not Christian in spite of all his claims that he is Christian."
Just as mainstream Lds draw boundaries between fundamentalist Mormons and mainstream Mormons, Christians likewise draw some boundaries. Lds "prophet" Hinckley even went so far on the Larry King Show to say fundamentalist Mormons don't exist -- meaning they weren't true Mormons.
Mormons can't have it both ways: They can't insist upon a definition of Mormondom while denying historic Christians to make a case for a definition of a Christian.

From the article:
1. Latter-day Saints believe God has a physical body, and is in fact an exalted man. "Evangelical Christians find this belief to be strange at best and blasphemous at worst," Millet said. "They feel that it shortens the distance between creator and creature. They feel the chasm between God and man is an infinite, uncross-able chasm...They feel that Joseph Smith bridged a chasm that one should not even presume to bridge..."Mormons worship a being that had its beginning as a non-divine spirit became a "man" on some planet (still not divine), and then rose up the ranks to godhood.
Bottom line here: Mormons don't worship the Ultimate god. They worship a low totem-poll god.
Christians, on the other hand, worship the God who always was and always is God!

Well, as that eminent journalist Mark Twain wrote:
"All men have heard of the Mormon Bible, but few except the "elect" have seen it, or, at least, taken the trouble to read it. I brought away a copy from Salt Lake. The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair, and yet so "slow," so sleepy; such an insipid mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print. If Joseph Smith composed this book, the act was a miracle keeping awake while he did it was, at any rate. If he, according to tradition, merely translated it from certain ancient and mysteriously-engraved plates of copper, which he declares he found under a stone in an out-of-the-way locality, the work of translating was equally a miracle, for the same reason."

From the article:
"They say we have a low view of the Bible, whereas they have a high view of the Bible..."If the Bible would have been "enough" for Mormons, Joseph Smith would not have had to rewrite his version of it (JST version). Or add to the book of Revelation as he did -- something the writer of Revelation forbids.
Also, whenever the Bible conflicts with Mormon "scripture" or any Mormon doctrine, the Biblical verses become unofficially "decanonized" for Mormons. One trumps the Bible.

I thought the LDS made a point of not wanting to be called Christians when they were first starting out. Was that the case or have always called themselves Christian?

Jesus Christ, God’s anointed one, the Incarnated Messiah, has bridged for us the unbridgeable gap.
Thanks be to Him, for his indescribable gift.

Just to repeat this article is an LDS OWNED paper. Yes, LDS OWNED.
The entire article explains why mormonISM is not Christianity, yet the (lds) still want to be called Christian.

lds have just recently wanted to be called Christian, the last two decades or less. After reading the lds article, you’d have to wonder why they’d want to be called Christian.

The LDS theology speaks for itself. They are the ones who say they’re not Christian. Joe Smith said it himself that they are not part of the Christian faith.

Yes, early on the made a big deal out of it. But being a business as the expanded their markets over seas they say the strength of the brand name and decided to coop (and corrupt) it.

The obvious answer is Jesus Christ, for whom Christianity is named.
Rational Christian brands such as Catholics might also recognize an authorized spokesman like the Pope, who at least has to go through a defined process to get to that position.
Irrational brands like Slick, merely anoint themselves as spokesman by virtue of their own superior knowledge which is superior because they say it is.
Sort of like the libtards who claim the right to government because they are so much smarter than the rest of us. If you don't believe it, just ask them.

Because the LDS figured they could get more of the ignorant and less discerning to join them if they say they’re “Christian”.
To: ejonesie22
Thanks. I thought I recalled that they didn't like being grouped with Christians of any sort. Now they want to be which is interesting and as you say, awfully convenient.

By your (il)logic, the Washington Post must agree with George Will's politics because they print his editorials.

That statement is just vapid of reason.
This is an lds owned paper explaining lds thoughts of Christianity vs mormonISM.
This would all make more sense to you if you knew mormonISM.
