After reading the Blazes report about Lizas Place and Hope Home, two womens shelters in Colorado that have lost federal funding because of mandatory Bible studies, Glenn Beck decided to take action.
While speaking on-air with Marilyn Vyzourek, the founder and executive director of the faith-based shelters, he generously donated $55,000 to replace the lost, government monies.
Prior to Becks inspiring announcement, Vyzourek explained the choice she had been given: They said I needed to cut down on my Bible studies or they would terminate my funding.
The Christian portion of the shelter program is essential, she said. Only Jesus can heal a human heart. These ladies need these Bible studies more than anything else, Vyzourek told Beck.
She went on to say that the women at these shelters work diligently to rebuild their lives and described some of the activities that the women partake in. Aside from volunteering 16 hours per week at a thrift store, they do written Bible studies, take parenting and cooking classes and work to create a life for themselves beyond the shelters doors.
After hearing about the total sum ($55,000) that the group lost and after learning that yet another staff member was going to be let go, Beck said, Were going to send you a check for $55,000. My wife and I would like to make sure that you dont lay any more people off and you keep those doors open.
Praise God!, she responded, pledging to put the money to good use.
Following this discussion, Stu Burguiere, Becks radio producer, sarcastically asked, What government program just mandated that you did that? Here was Becks passionate response:
You know what did that capitalism. I have made money. I have worked hard. I have done the things that put me in a situation to where I can make money. And then my wife and I decide what do to with that money.
And if the government doesnt think that a faith-based charity should get any money, well then it is up to me, an individual who believes in small government, to make up the difference.
That led the team to play to a comedy bit involving a cattle prod, after Beck asked whats really behind the funding cut: What are they afraid of. You talk about Jesus. What are you going to have a cattle prod?

The way I understand it, this is actually what Charity is about. Not government funded, people funding the groups they think deserve the donations.
We have to fund everything we don’t want with tax money. Take all funding away and let people support what is dear to them.
And good on you Glenn Beck!
Good for Mr. Beck!
I love Glenn Beck!
He puts his money where his mouth is.
Good for him. Of course the others often preach the religion of liberalism and readily provide the brain washing literature validating women as victims and men as meanies. Those shelters get the funding.
I don’t support federal funds for ANY shelter, women or otherwise, but good on Beck for supporting a Christian charity.
This is PERFECT. Now the government just needs to say no to everyone else who gets this free money. I love it so much. Why are we supporting a women’s shelter anyway. The federal government can be cut so much and yet for some reason the only place they can find to cut is defense.....hummmmmmmm.
Thanks for the good news story!
He does a lot of this sort of thing without media coverage but he’s talking about this as a means of setting an example. One other case I know of is when he paid for a family to take their son to a clinic because the boy had some sort of progressive blindness that was potentially reversible but very expensive. I’ve heard of other cases that Glenn didn’t mention.
I think he follows the example of John Huntsman Sr who is a true billionaire philanthropist.
This is the kind of thing that happens when you take money from the nanny state. Good on Beck for donating to them.
This is the same sort of thing that brought the modern Black Robe Regiment into being. They’re churches that are voluntarily paying taxes so they can speak of politics from the pulpit just like the revolution era churches did.
Last winter I did as Glenn suggested. I bought a bag of groceries and gave it to someone who looked like they needed it. I saw a middle aged woman walking out of the unemployment office and gave her the bag of groceries. Inside I left a short note that said something along the lines of, “True freedom from government is tax free, see you at the next Tea Party event”
A very good read is Marvin Olasky's "The Tragedy of American Compassion"
Chronicles how government has corrupted charity.
The lesson here is, keep the government out of “charity.”
It’s not charity, anyway, when they force us to pay.
Get private funding and study the Bible without hassle.
Ditto.
Ditto.
That’s what you call putting your money where your mouth is.
What a great statement. Thank you for posting it!
Bump
Yes! I agree...
and the fact that he is a Mormon (like Mitt Romney) I think is cool!
