Catholics get a bad rap for thinking we somehow “merit” or “earn” our own sanctification (and salvation) through “works” that we do. But that’s a misunderstanding of what the Catholic Church actually teaches. Our sanctification (our being made holy) happens only by the Grace of God. But it does require a response on our part. We must cooperate with it. This submission to and cooperation with God’s Grace, Catholics call a “work” and it takes various forms.
Some identify this response to God’s grace as a kind of “saving” or “justifying” faith (a faith that produces or is accompanied by works of conversion, hope and charity) as opposed to a “work” – something we do. Such a position is reconcilable with Catholic teaching once we understand each side’s terminology. On the other hand, I think it’s confusing to refer to this cooperation with and submission to God’s Grace as simply “faith alone” – which is one reason Catholics don’t refer to it that way (and probably one reason the Bible says we are “not” saved by “faith alone” – James 2:24).
Anyway, here Fr. Barron speaks a little bit about some of these sanctifying practices of the Church and what we mean by “Purgatory” (an extension of that sanctification) in the super-natural sense.

This exclusive preview clip was from CATHOLICISM, Episode X: WORLD WITHOUT END: THE LAST THINGS.
Explore the Churchs conviction that life here and now is preparation for an extraordinary world that is yet to come a supernatural destiny. Father Barron presents the Catholic vision of death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory as he journeys to Florence, Ireland and Rome.
The vision of the Church sees beyond this world and invites us to consider a world without end. Father Barron shows how this vision is supported by the mystery and truth of the Resurrection of Jesus.

>>>>>Besides, if you’ve read theses threads with any frequency, you can easily see those who are sincere and those who only take pot shots and run.
Yes. easily.
When they claim the Church teaches what it does not, yes, by definition. If you want to know what we teach, it's easy to find out.
What the Church teaches is not hidden. Long ago, at the least since Justin and Irenaeus, Christians fought and defeated the gnostics (and Docetists and Ebionites, etc. etc..); this part of the history of the Church is over 1800 years old.
If you wish to know what the Church believes it is here plainly stated. This is the Credo of the Church, the creed of the Christian faith.
Why don't you stop hounding me after every post and expecting me to do your bidding? Getting the Moderator involved too! Go back and look at your very own post. You admitted that the "bad" source was NOT the source but only popped up later AND IT WASN'T EVEN MY POST. If you have solid proof that someone else used a banned source go complain to the Moderator, don't come to me expecting me to do your homework. Okay?
l'm beginning to think you actually don't know it is really you that is talking, not God.
Oh, well.
It appears you are disabowing the source. Why?
Heh. Perceptive.
No facts on the two texts and numbering systems of the decalogue? Sorry, that's a dodge and factually incorrect. Honest discussion requires admitting factual errors.
I believe you have more than adequately proved your point. I think saying their church had already “ruled” on the relevancy of I Cor. 3 for Purgatory proved that, no matter what evidence you brought to the contrary, their mind was already made up.
By your logic, you prefer to whittle that down to a couple of hundred years, or 40 years or however many months you've had your current fallilble opinions.
Maybe if you studied the history of the Church, you might gain some appreciation for what you believe and how it came to be from Christ to today.
Ranger fans are in Hell right now.
Uh-oh...somebody’s gonna be in trouble for linking to a “known” hate site supposedly “banned” from Free Republic! (and it isn’t you);o)
This was wonderful, but game 6, I’m goig to watch it again at least once. What a series!!
Thanks for that helpful link. Are you sure it is banned on Free Republic or is it only because y’all would like for it to be banned?
I’m not the mod.
"Roman Catholic Ten Commandments" brought up 10,800,000 hits! The first link is http://www.the-ten-commandments.org/romancatholic-tencommandments.html and the first few paragraphs are interesting:
The table below shows the Ten Commandments as personally spoken and written by God using the King James translation and the Ten Commandments as changed by the Roman Catholic Church. They believe that their authority stands above the Word of God and that they can change God's times and laws and God will prescribe to their changes. You will note that they deleted the second Commandment and changed God's Sabbath to Sunday and split the tenth Commandment into two to get back to Ten Commandments. As a result the Roman Catholic version of the Ten Commandments is always one ahead of the King James in the Decalogue until the tenth Commandment when they break it into two and make it the ninth and tenth Commandments.
The following from the Catholic Encyclopaedia Vol. 4, p. 153 also confirms the deletion of the second Commandment and the change of the fourth. The church, after changing the day of rest from the Jewish Sabbath of the seventh day of the week to the first made the third commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy as the Lord's Day.
This truth can also be found from the following URL which you will need to copy and paste into the address bar as links promote search engine ranking and I cannot promote what is not Biblical truth. The Catholic version is the column on the right hand side titled A Traditional Catechetical Formula. The URL is http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/command.htm
In 1562 the Archbishop declared that tradition now stood above scripture. The authority of the Church is illustrated most clearly by the scriptures, for on one hand she recommends them, declares them to be divine, and offers them to us to be read, and on the other hand, the legal precepts in the scriptures taught by the Lord have ceased by virtue of the same authority. The Sabbath, the most glorious day in the law, has been changed into the Lord's day. These and other similar matters have not ceased by virtue of Christ's teaching (for He says that He has come to fulfill the law, not to destroy it), but they have been changed by the authority of the Church. Gaspare de Posso Archbishop of Reggio, Council of Trent.
Thanks for the link. I encourage every Catholic poster to read it, to learn what your adversaries profess to be truth, and decide for yourselves if it is or isn’t a hate site..
You do realize that how the Ten Commandents are enumerated is strictly by tradition as sacred Scripture itself does not provide the numbering? To argue about the numbering and division is silly and just makes it look like some people are desperate to grab any stick to beat on the Catholics. Maybe this will help you to understand the Decalogue

6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 7 you shall have no other gods before me. 8 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. |

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. |

Iam the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
You shall not kill.

You shall not covet ... anything that is your neighbor's....
