What the Church means by Purgatory

Catholics get a bad rap for thinking we somehow “merit” or “earn” our own sanctification (and salvation) through “works” that we do. But that’s a misunderstanding of what the Catholic Church actually teaches. Our sanctification (our being made holy) happens only by the Grace of God. But it does require a response on our part. We must cooperate with it. This submission to and cooperation with God’s Grace, Catholics call a “work” and it takes various forms.

Some identify this response to God’s grace as a kind of “saving” or “justifying” faith (a faith that produces or is accompanied by works of conversion, hope and charity) as opposed to a “work” – something we do. Such a position is reconcilable with Catholic teaching once we understand each side’s terminology. On the other hand, I think it’s confusing to refer to this cooperation with and submission to God’s Grace as simply “faith alone” – which is one reason Catholics don’t refer to it that way (and probably one reason the Bible says we are “not” saved by “faith alone” – James 2:24).

Anyway, here Fr. Barron speaks a little bit about some of these sanctifying practices of the Church and what we mean by “Purgatory” (an extension of that sanctification) in the super-natural sense.

This exclusive preview clip was from CATHOLICISM, Episode X: “WORLD WITHOUT END: THE LAST THINGS”.

Explore the Church’s conviction that life here and now is preparation for an extraordinary world that is yet to come – a supernatural destiny. Father Barron presents the Catholic vision of death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory as he journeys to Florence, Ireland and Rome.

The vision of the Church sees beyond this world and invites us to consider a world without end. Father Barron shows how this vision is supported by the mystery and truth of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Then the question is WHY?

We're not supposed to tell but, we have Moses's original tablets in the basement of the Vatican and that's the numbering he used.

You know what, D-fendr? I AM ignorant. Of everything the RCC does. Everything it changes, “improves”, “implicitly states”, “explicitly states”, adds to, takes from, spins, twists, contorts, commands, threatens, takes credit for and denies culpability in. There is NOTHING that the RCC has not tried to “change” for her benefit. So, yeah, call me ignorant. I’m so ignorant that I refuse to defend the indefensible.

When I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ because of my trusting in Him, then the works Jesus did are credited to my account and God sees those works, so even if I am judged based on works, God is looking not at my own worthless works that I thought were good enough, but at the works of Jesus imputed to me; credited to my account.

Amen! That is what is called being "found in him, not having a righteousness of my own...but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith." (Phil. 3:9)

You’re probably right...prance in and limp away. And then complain that it wasn’t fair. It gets old, doesn’t it? lol!

Or you could just say you jumped on the “disappearing second commandment” without due diligence to check, accepting it apparently based on fundamental prejudicial view. I’m no longer surprised that some are willing to believe the most outrageous things, I think because they have this idea of the Church that belongs back during the Wars of Religion.

I forget who said it, but it goes something like: Not many oppose what the Church teaches , but what they think the Church teaches.

And there is a way to cure ignorance, but it takes time and a willingness to know the subject before engaging in discussion.

The Church is as old as Acts, she has weathered every variation of false doctrine and theology and heresy you can think of and then some. The Church’s writings, by theologians, Saints and scholars, in her long history are immense, accumulated over two millenia. The language and terminology are specific developed over this long history and encompass all aspects of Christology, Salvation, liturgy, church structure, spiritual practice, etc.

A shallow knowledge combined with severe prejudice is not recommended preparation for real discussion.

The only hysteria I’m witnessing on this forum is from the RCs.

"The Moderator has also told you the same thing."

The ignorance or insensitivity of the moderators and anti-Catholic Freepers aside, it is a painful issue to many Catholics. The term "Roman Catholic" was not used until the 17th century and can be found in no other language. The Church never refers to herself as "Roman Catholic". Whether you choose to use the term or not is between you and your Christian conscience.

That does not deserve an answer, except that my Savior is my judge, not you.

"They may not know they are in error."

To dishonestly display a limited number of translations that counter your point and support theirs and to state that others "can't be found" is one yet one more example of the depths some will sink to to make their point.

Good question! On this particular issue, said person accused moi of leaving out part of another's comments and called it "sneaky" even. But when it was brought to his attention that I had NOT left the part out, I have yet to hear one word of apology. Not a day goes by that we don't see DEMANDS for retractions, apologies and reparations, yet not a word on such an easily proven mistake. Instead, all I've seen is MORE derision, more repetition of the same mistake and, get this, laughingly calling it "whining". Imagine the outrage if the shoe was on the other foot! Either way, I didn't expect the consideration. I think some have made it more than clear, we are just "swine" who don't deserve Christian charity.

Other than that, you are quite correct that things do not seem to be in place. My Mom asked me for the reference for the "be still and know that I am God" verse. I showed her it was from Psalm 46:10, she said "her" Bible didn't have that. Sure enough, when I looked it up in several online versions, the Douay-Rheims has Psalm 46:10 as "The princes of the people are gathered together, with the God of Abraham: for the strong gods of the earth are exceedingly exalted." - weird. I did a search for the phrase, "The princes of the people are gathered together..." in the KJV and it hit on Psalm 47:9. Which says, "The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.". Psalm 45:11, in the DR appears to be where the "be still and know that I am God" verse is. I'd like to know why the DR is off from the other English language versions.

Can you imagine when those during the reformation period began to translate from the original Greek and Hebrew realized that the Bible the RC was using didn’t match up? Is it any wonder they ended up splitting after trying to get the RC to see the error? God was surely using those men to get true scripture out to the people.
