This is a condescending, self-serving gesture, and reinforces the idea that Mexicans are simply an object of charity for the left rather than people who want to live decent lives and have the same for their kids. These sisters would probably be out sprinkling blood on military establishments if they didn’t have this to do. That was the favorite gesture of some elderly leftist nuns in my neck of the woods, and they were once accompanied in this by our former bishop - sigh.
If they really wanted to improve things, they’d be working on getting the immigration laws changed so that there would be a short-term visa, just for Latin Americans with particular emphasis on Mexicans, so that they could legally come into the US to work and also legally return to Mexico.
In fact, many in the border areas would simply live in Mexico and come across to work. And unless the US generates a sudden surge of younger workers who want to work as hotel maids or on slaughterhouse lines, in groundskeeping or unskilled construction work, they are necessary. Having a good short-term visa policy would eliminate probably about 50% of our illegal immigration.
The part that is made up of ME terrorists and drug criminals, Russian fraudsters, African welfare sponges and Chinese prostitutes still remains to be dealt with, but if we could sort out people from neighboring countries who actually just want to work, that would make it a lot easier to get the really dangerous component. It would also make it a lot easier to identify and nab bad Latin American immigrants (i.e., drug gang members).
But that’s too reasonable, so it will never happen.

Plus the Border Agents have enough to deal with without having to look after the safety of these women.
