OK, who were the aliens in the days of Christ?

The Canaanite woman?

The person helped by the Good Samaritan?

Does God create these humans and love them just as much as He loves us?

I think so. And I am not in favor of illegal immigration at all. I am in favor of doing it the right way, learning English, taking the test and the pledge, etc. then becoming a U. S. citizen.

And you have very succinctly stated the problem we have, as convervatives. We insist on following the rules, but we also have compassion for those less fortunate.

I donate to a coworker’s church that, in turn, gives clothing and household items to Mexicans just across the border.

And I run the illegal alien ping list.

We have to acknowledge the total picture and work to arrive at a solution that satisfies both sides. We need to preserve our national identity and the rule of law; we need to help a supressed people improve their lot in life. Many will disagree that we necessarilly need to do that. So be it; IMHO they’re wrong. No other nation will.

It is true that Mexico needs to help itself, and it is trying to do so (no thanks to Obama and the ATF!), which is precisely one of the reasons the drug gangs are fighting back. The Calderon government is trying to undo decades of corruption in which criminals and unions and socialist politicians had a cozy relationship, and all of these forces are fighting back now. It’s going to take a while, and if Obama has his way, it won’t work.

Also, in terms of Americans doing menial labor, we have a couple of problems. In many parts of the US, there are no longer enough young people to do some of these jobs; we have an aging native population. One of the other problems, however, is that we cannot force those people who would be likely candidates for these jobs (things like illiterate inner city blacks, illiterate rural white meth-makers, etc.) to do them. The state of Alabama has had so much “success” getting rid of its Mexican field hands (both illegal and legal, apparently) that it floated the idea of ordering prisoners to go work in the fields and harvest the crops, but the prisoners objected because the work was too hard and they said that being sentenced to do it would constitute slavery.

Also, most able-bodied males who might do these jobs don’t get welfare anymore. They usually live off of the welfare check of their baby momma, of course, combined with crime, but the fact is that there is very little leverage over them to get them to work. We can’t cut off their welfare because they actually don’t receive it directly.

And furthermore, who wants to work with them? They have no work ethic, they don’t show up and they don’t stay if they do show up, they do no work, and they are often dangerous. And believe me, the local, state and even federal governments have poured a fortune into skills training and “work readiness” programs, attempting to get these people into the labor stream. But the poor dears get offended because they find that in the real world, the employer does not send a van to pick them up and provide them with a hot breakfast at work every day, as the programs do. In the meantime, the Mexicans are out at the motel tinkering with the heap of junk car they have pooled their money to buy so that 10 of them can pile into it and get to work.

As for wages, there’s no way wages in these jobs can be very high. The Mexicans can survive and even save because they work long hours and usually live 12 to a room, but if a high wage were paid for tomato picking, say, the rest of us would be able to afford about one tomato per year. What is happening in many of these jobs is mechanization, and that will probably ultimately eliminate most of these jobs for anyone in a few more years. Some of these problems may solve themselves.

I think the thing to do is focus on what would control the situation right now and give us at least a jumping off point for building a good policy. To me it seems that short term visas would be a start.

I might be for the short term visas if I trusted politicians.

Politicians are the problem with everything. They simply can't be trusted.
