"See I have given before you today life and good and death and bad." (From this week's Torah portion, Netzvim, Deuteronomy 30:15)
Don't we know that life is good and death is bad? Not really. Our natural will is to stop living and to merely exist. In other words, to stop working and to just be passive; to shed responsibility. To live, we must preserve a state of separation or differentiation. The world was created in a process that separated light from darkness, heaven from earth and land from water. A living organism lives in the same way: it is created from the repeated differentiation of cells. But our natural predisposition is toward osmosis - blending in and returning to the chaos that preceded life.
The choice of life requires unending energy to guard the separation. Our natural urge is to bow out of this struggle for life and to dream of a world that has no separations, no good or bad, no heaven or hell, no countries or religions, no men or women. Imagine.
So yes. It is very easy to become confused and to think that death is good and that life is bad.
"I bring as witnesses to you today the heavens and the earth, I have set life and death before you, blessing and curse, and you shall choose life so that you and your offspring may live. To love Hashem your G-d, to listen to His voice and to cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days to dwell on the Land that Hashem your G-d has vowed to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give it to them." (ibid, 19-20).
Israel among the nations is like the heart in the body. Their Land, the Land of Israel, is the heart of all the lands of the earth. It is the Land of Life, the beating heart that enlivens creation.
If Jews thought that they could live here in the Land of Israel, like just another 'normal' nation, reality has come along and poked its finger in our collective eye. The Land is slowly but surely being taken away from us.
Guarding the heart is not like guarding the external organs. It takes less energy to preserve the separations between them. To live in the Land of Israel, we must actively and supremely choose life. Then we will merit to live for eternity in the Land of our forefathers.
Shabbat Shalom,

Ping.
How can Jewish nationalism be a religion, especially for non-Jews like yourself?
Yalk Hadash !
This takes us over the top into the realm of superstition.
Try reading your Bible from the front some time.
My advice: stay off the religion forum.
Find a nice Communist or Randian forum where you won't have to worry about being assailed by "superstition."
Try reading your Bible from the front some time.
My bible says to serve God first and foremost. Nationalism is a service to man and should therefore receive lower priority than service to God. Normally people who are nationalist are only that way toward their own nation.
Where in the Old Testament does it say the non-Jews are supposed to become Jewish nationalists? Of course in the New Testament it says just the opposite.
America should take note.
If people thought that they could live here in America, like just another 'normal' nation, reality has come along and poked its finger in our collective eye. The Land is slowly but surely being taken away from us.
Thanks for your advice. No thanks.
Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Until "the Nation of Israel dwelling in the land of Israel" turns to Jesus the Son of God, their Messiah, neither they, nor the world will be blessed. Jesus is that singular "seed" of Abraham through whom all the kindreds of the earth can be blessed.
No blessing in the nation of Israel by merely dwelling in the land. Without Jesus the Son of God, the source of all blessings, Israel is not blessed.
So?
That's funny, considering that Catholicism supports every nationalism on earth other than Jewish nationalism. The Irish, the Poles, the Spanish, the French . . . all have their own "holy nationalism." In theory chr*stianity has replaced the nation of Israel with the chr*stian church. In fact it replaced Israel with every chr*stian nation on earth. Now everybody tells themselves they are the "special chosen holy nation" . . . including the American "patriot movement."
Normally people who are nationalist are only that way toward their own nation.
Yes. They're called "henotheists."
Where in the Old Testament does it say the non-Jews are supposed to become Jewish nationalists?
The Bible wasn't written to non-Jews. The translation of the Bible out of Hebrew into another language is actually one of the things mourned on the fast day of `Asarah BeTevet. It is Israel's duty to teach the nations the things of G-d . . . something they were unable to carry out for so long (because of the dire punishments involved) that now unfortunately most of them have forgotten about this duty.
Of course in the New Testament it says just the opposite.
Well, duh. The "new testament" (like the koran, the book of mormon, etc.) was written to discredit the Holy Torah. Since the definitive Revelation was at Mt. Sinai, please forgive me if I have no interest in the claims of false religions.
Theist religion and nationalism are entirely distinct. Nationalism normally results from the mutual bonds of loyalty shared among members of the same nation and is consistent with Natural Law. By contrast, religion consists of the bonds between man and God according to the requirements of Supernatural Law. Religion and nationalism may coexist, but the latter must properly give way before the former.
This combination of supernatural religion and natural nationalism is the healthy result of strong Catholic faith lived out in a majority-Catholic.
This replacement of supernatural religion with natural nationalism is erroneous. This is naturalism.
You mean like the Irish Republican Army?
This replacement of supernatural religion with natural nationalism is erroneous. This is naturalism.
Since it was Israel and only Israel that was elected by G-d A-mighty at Sinai, it would seem that Jewish nationalism is the one and only supernatural nationalism.
Check my tagline!
It only seems that way if you ignore scripture. God said He would punish Israel for disobedience. Accepting such punishment with humility goes against nationalism and requires supernatural faith. Putting nationalism first is rejection of supernatural faith and is therefore naturalism.
Hey, conspirator, mind translating your tagline? Or is it some kind of secret conspiratorial code? Perhaps there is a clue in your first word, Ki-hagoy. Something about the goyim? Inquiring minds would like to know.
It's from the prophecy of Isaiah: "For the nation and the kingdom that does not serve you [Israel] shall perish . . . "
Thanks, where is that scripture at in Isaiah?
