My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

"Well, you died for my sins, and you knew what I'd do, so, give me my mansion, okay?"

It's very telling that you would use those words. There are those who I believe honestly think they WILL approach God with an attitude. "Okay, where's mine? You call THAT a mansion? FEH. All the work I did, all the soup I ladled out, and THIS is what I get? Look at that one, it's WAY bigger than mine, and I know for a FACT she didn't do nearly as much as I did. Don't you even remember that I went to Mass during the hurricane? That should count for something....oh well, a little paint here, and a little landscaping there, and a statue or two by the door...I guess I can make it work"..[[[sigh]]]

Suppose He wants to know why you didn’t repent?

Judith Anne, what we have here is an example of the diversity of Protestantism.

Some believe that OSAS (once saved always saved), others believe they can lose their salvation and must seek forgiveness (by praying with a repentant heart), others believe that if you become a sinner once you have been saved, then you were never really saved in the first place.

Diversity, ain’t it great? LOL

Like RnMomof7 said, We repent when we have offended God.

Suppose He wants to know why you went to a fallible man to confess your sins to and walked out thinking because he said you were forgiven, then you were? Suppose He wants to know why you prayed to Mary for intercession when Christ is our only Mediator? As He has said in His Word.

It's dishonest to only post part of what you're replying to, in order to change the meaning. Lwt's look at your post first: HE'S OMNICIENT, Judith Anne. He knows EVERYTHING. Past, present, future. How many of your sins were future when Christ died for them? Then, my reply to that: So, why would anyone ever bother repenting of anything? I guess that's what you do, I can't wait to be there when you tell God, "Well, you died for my sins, and you knew what I'd do, so, give me my mansion, okay? Then, your sinful reply: It's very telling that you would use those words. That has nothing to do with me. I posted, when I first posted about the group of Catholic women who prepare lunch for the poor, that they do it in the spirit of "Inasmuch as you do it unto the least of these, you have done it unto Me." They have more humility in their little fingers than I have seen out of you in over a year. I am privileged to be a part of their group. If I were you, I'd pray for forgiveness. But of course, I'm not you, and I'm sure you don't think you need it.

Don't you think He would know?

Repentance is not a work of the flesh..it is a work of God..

The Holy Spirit brings to our minds our sin..and God brings us to repentance..

There is a way man repents ( in the flesh) that benefits nothing.. and is actually a sin before God

One that is saved is led by the Holy Spirit ...

And you say Catholics twist scripture...

There is a way man repents ( in the flesh) that benefits nothing.. and is actually a sin before God

I would be interested to see your Biblical support for that.

Once again, Judith Anne. It's BEatitudes. NOT ATTITUDES.

All our sins were future when Christ died for them. Those who accept His finished work are forgiven. And saved. That cannot be taken away. If we offend God in our daily walk with Him, we are like children who have done something to hurt a parent. They are still our parent, they still love us, nothing is going to change about that, but we want our relationship to be back to the place it was. Where we glorify God and preach the gospel of our salvation, without feeling God is in any way disappointed with us. We are dead and our life is hid with Christ in God, but we still live in these earthly outer man bodies of flesh. Anything at any time can go wrong. We know it, and thank God He made provision for that. We are saved, not perfect, as long as we are in these bodies of flesh.

It’s so very clear. And if someone is still in the dark about it, please keep reading. It comes out when they least expect it to.

And Paul’s commandments in Hebrews 13?

Paul’s commandments in Hebrews 13..LOL! You seem to think you are going to trip me up into saying Paul wrote Hebrews. Give it up. One trick ponies have never impressed me.

"So anyone that has not been “dunked” is unforgiven and lost?

Dunking sounds so pedestrian. To baptize, from the Greek baptizein, means to "plunge" or "immerse". But anyone professing to have actually been a practicing Catholic would know that for Catholics Salvation is a process, not a "once and done" event".

"He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned" - Mk 16:16.

smvoice, I’ll admit it. I am confused.

So do you ask for forgiveness for your offense to God or do you feel that you are still okay and that God has no problem with you?

When you offend your parents you would still apologize wouldn’t you? Even though you know they love you?

"We repent because we have offended God..."

You should repent and confess your sins out of true remorse and contrition. Our sins did not just offend God, they crucified Jesus. That is a heavy burden to carry.

God has ALREADY forgiven me, don’t you get that? It’s just a spiritual thank you for forgiving me, that was a really stoopid thing I just did..It was forgiven the moment I accepted Christ’s finished work on my behalf. All of it, yesterday, today, tomorrow. Not that I won’t do boneheaded things or that I fear if I do a boneheaded thing and don’t ask God to forgive me, then He won’t. It’s not a “WILL YOU FORGIVE ME?” It’s a “THANK YOU FOR FORGIVING ME”. It’s an acknowledgement that I know I’m not perfect and I know WHY He says I am.

1. Keep on loving each other as brothers.
2. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
3. Remember those in prison as if you were fellow prisoners.
4. And those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
5. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
6 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have. Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
7., Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings
8. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
9. Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.

These are Paul’s commandments in the Age of Grace. Do you reject them?
