Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”
It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Actually, the Mormons are pretty proficient at slapping on the *anti-* label as well.
And it’s over the same things. Disagree with their doctrines and show from Scripture where they’re wrong, and suddenly they’re the martyrs and we’re all *antis* and *haters*.

Well, seeing as I never mentioned the word "Catholic" in that post, I find it interesting that you both seemed to think I was referring to it. There are many religions and cults that have that same kind of hold on their adherents.

The “interesting” fact is explained thus:
If somebody were to say, “They’re shiftless, unreliable, over-sexed, and cowardly, but they do make wonderful athletes, and have a great musical sense and natural rhythm,though as a class they are less intelligent than we,” how many would be astonished if a black person took offense or expressed incredulity when told that, after all, nobody SAID, “black”?

A response to anti-Catholicism needs to be measured,... tolerant and considerate,... and must be a response that reflects well on the church....
... It cannot be an approach of invective and suspicion,.. of overheated pronouncements and wholesale condemnations-...all tactics that poorly reflect the charism of the church.
It must be, in short, an approach of reason and charity: the approach of the thoughtful Christian and hopeful American Catholic.

Actually, I went back several posts before there was any reference to anything pertaining to a specific religion and that was only a comment about the authority of a magisterium.

When Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:23 that he received of the Lord was he talking about the bread and the wine? Surely you weren’t speaking of direct teaching from Christ in person were you?
With 2 Thessalonians 2:15 were you referencing the “by word or epistle” that Cyril of Jerusalem later agreed was “put in writing”? Let’s look at what he said. He is after all one of your church fathers isn’t he?

Irenaeus succinctly states it in these words:
We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith. It wasn’t until the 16th century at the Council of Trent that the Catholic Church stopped using scripture as it’s only authority.

Are these types of invectives, pejoratives, and other attempts to demean or disparage the person you are debating a regular part of your personality? I can’t find it in the fruits of the Spirit.

We are starting our annual Parish Pastoral Council election process. For my sins, I’m in charge.
We have three sundays of nominations, starting last Sunday. Somebody wrote a pretty snotty note on the nomination form. I showed it to the Pastor. His response was, “Well, THAT’s not helpful.”
I said, “Father, it’s not helpful, but it IS data. We need to know if somebody’s angry.”
Dealing here not only makes me think and re-think my faith, it also reminds me that my faith is weak and my confidence paltry.
It’s painful, but, D00d, we’re Catholics! We know how pain can inform and work for everyone’s good, IF we “offer it up.”
I have much to be ashamed of. I got myself suspended once. I have mocked and taunted.
I did not so learn Christ.

Which is too bad because the advice given is worth understanding. Makes one wonder just what sources are ever sufficient of your own churches membership and their authorities they take their cues from.

No, the way real life works for people with integrity is when they have no evidence to back up their slander they don’t publish it. Only people that cannot feel shame because they have no scruples about lying, publish without any evidence.
In real life an institutions reputation is evidence and Moody’s reputation for upholding and propagating the Christian faith is impeccable.

What a great name by the way.
It does get tiresome but, it never makes me doubt my faith. The remarks I read here strength my faith. I know that when I became a Catholic I did exactly what God wanted me to do.
How lucky am I? I belong to a faith that has been here for 2000 years! I got the cream of faith. The best faith. And I thank God every single day that He made me Catholic.
