Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

And just where do we have the record of the words of Christ?
Nah! Those with even a modicum of intelligence are well aware of my "Unitarian Philosophy" as opposed to UU membership.
Sadly there are always a few primitive souls who will never understand the difference and feel compelled to rant on endlessly. That is one of the reasons were invented.
Sola Scriptura
Luke tells us that even if Paul and Silas are the teachers we should search the scriptures whether those things were so.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.<<
Paul himself says not to think of men above what is written. If some man says something is so we need to check it with what is written.
I Corinthians 4:6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
The Trinity.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Now for the bodily assumption of Mary. I cant seem to find any scripture to prove that. Im sure you would be so kind as to point to book, chapter and verse as I have done with the other two.
>>yet fail to see the problems that accompany the individual interpretation of scripture.<<
Now maybe we are getting somewhere. Would you please, please show us where it is in scripture where you, strictly by scripture and what Jesus teaches mind you, find the bodily assumption of Mary?
Which generation of Sola Scriptura are you referring to? SS 1.0 that asserted that all that is necessary for Salvation can be found in Scripture, SS 2.0 that asserts that 100% of the Revealed Word of God is contained in Scripture or SS 3.0 that claims that each individual's own personal interpretation of Scripture is what everyone else must rely on for Salvation?
“Snarks away!”
Be still my heart!
This is rich...And then you babble on:
These are the losers in school who either bullied others and then grew up and realised that they were nobodies or the bullied kids who had no skills.
either way, they are sad, pathetic losers with no social or any skills -- they may claim to be psychologists but one wonders how desperate folks would be to go to them! Also, they strangely seem to not know anything about psychoanalysis.
They also have strong parental issues -- their parents were hurt that their kids rejected orthodox Lutheran theology for the wildness of aliens-among-us beliefs.
Sola scriptura (Latin ablative, "by scripture alone") is the doctrine that the Bible contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness. Consequently, sola scriptura demands that only those doctrines are to be admitted or confessed that are found directly within or indirectly by using valid logical deduction or valid deductive reasoning from scripture. However, sola scriptura is not a denial of other authorities governing Christian life and devotion. Rather, it simply demands that all other authorities are subordinate to, and are to be corrected by, the written word of God. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sola_scriptura)
No teaching is to believed if it isnt found in scripture and no assumptions will do.
not to go beyond the things which are written.
Can we find what they teach in scripture.
they examined the Scriptures daily whether these things were so,
Nice try at diversion and deflection though! Surely you werent trying to duck the question of where in scripture you find proof of the bodily assumption of Mary. Book, chapter, and verse would be best.
Correct...But the word is...And God placed it above his name which incidently puts the word above everything...Including your church...
I rest my case about the wee hours posts of the lonely, insecure, needy, desperate for affirmation and overall bitter and confused lemming. Kinda sad, actually.
You're kidding, right? The disciples asked Jesus about how they would know about the end times, NOT about what had already happened - which they would have ALREADY known. Sometimes the things that get thrown out on these forums sound like Monty Python skits!
Unfortunately, many Catholics fall prey to the siren call of protestantism and other non Christian religions.
Some of the stuff that comes out of some of your mouths,,,wow...
"To be deep in God's word is to cease to be Catholic." me.
To be deep in God's word is to reject any notion that John Newman is authoritative...When I am holding a bible, why would I care what John Newman thinks???
Let me see. Who should I believe?
God or John Newman?
No I don't. Sorry. But I bet you do. lol.
Possibly????
Richard Sipe, a psychotherapist and former priest, has studied celibacy, chastity, and sexuality in the priesthood for four decades. He has authored three books on the topic. He once estimated that 30%of the priesthood is homosexually oriented. Elsewhere, he is quoted as estimating that between 25%and 45%of American priests are homosexual in orientation.
He told the Boston Globe:If they were to eliminate all those who were homosexually oriented, the number would be so staggering that it would be like an atomic bomb; it would do the same damage to the church's operation...It would mean the resignation of at least a third of the bishops of the world. And it's very much against the tradition of the church; many saints had a gay orientation, and many popes had gay orientations. Discriminating against orientation is not going to solve the problem.

I know Mom has things in her life for which she is deeply ashamed - don't we all - and I believe that may be the impetus for the feeling of having to suffer for her sins even after she has been to confession for them. I think the purpose for some of these emotions is to remind us of the consequences spiritually of our disobedience. But God does not intend for us to wallow in our brokenness rather he desires for us to arise and continue the race brushing off the dirt that stuck to us when we fell. I pray she really does know she IS forgiven, she really does BELIEVE God has forgiven her. Thanks again for your thoughts.
I’ll bet if John CARDINAL Newman had spent as much time deep in God’s word instead of history, he would have been known as Pastor John Newman..
According to who, the wiki? That is really reaching (and reinforces the tragedy of not having your own teaching authority). There are many Scripture references to teachings and interpretations of teachings not included in actual Scripture itself, not the least of which is:
Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. - John 21:25
