Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

Gee, thanks Mark. I think I can sleep peacefully tonight knowing we have actually agreed on something. ;o)
No, Jvette. It was not an imagined game. There is a real reason Paul was not chosen as the 12th Disciple. There are a couple of reasons. But I won't sully Judith Anne's post with truth.
As a former seventh grade English teacher as well as a copy editor, I think she did a good job with that sentence.
Thanks very much for the extremely instructive exchange tonight.
And boatbums, I don’t see much point in trying to start a Christian friendship. As inviting as the thought was, I don’t like the people you hang around with. I don’t think it’s possible to change the tone on open threads. Too much anti-Catholic hate around here.
Has bearing false witness become a new
Vatican Ishtar-Mary-Goddess cult hobby or is it now a RELIGIOUS duty of obligation?
Actually,
WRONG again . . .
Most Proddys don’t ping the mods much at all, if at all.
perhaps 1 time a year . . . some once in 3-4 months or 6 months.
Not our style.
Not our Vatican Ishtar-Mary Goddess religious duty of obligation.
From our perspective, We don’t get less time in a nonexistent purgatory for such.
We also don’t bother . . . Most of us think that it’s better to let the horrific examples shine in all their smelly unglory.
Occasionally, when the UTTER UNMITIGATED MEAN-SPIRITED, OUTRAGEOUSLY HYPOCRITICAL JUNK gets neck high, one of us may ping for at least a hint more of balanced modding . . . mostly we are just silent, except to each other or posting a fitting response.
Whatever.
Call me a whiny hypocrite, and ignore Quix?
You have no credibility whatsoever.
Dear Mod, sorry I got personal. I won’t, anymore.
I have speculated about this on FR in the past. My understanding may be cloudy however. I would love to hear your understanding. Maybe you could freepmail me?
We "took" what we believe from Holy Scripture which combines the teachings of Jesus as well as God's subsequent revelation to the others to whom he utilized to create what we call the Bible. Roman Catholics also derived some of their core doctrines from the same source, so it is hardly accurate to insist we "took" anything from Catholicism.
True, we did not redefine Christianity, but the Catholic Church had and where their dogmas contradict Scripture, we reject the most grievous ones. Remember, the intent of the Reformation was NOT to break apart the church, but to steer it back to original orthodoxy. Those in charge at the time loved their wealth and power too much so a break had to happen.
I said we would disagree as to interpretations of Scripture and what is implicit in Scripture, i.e. Scriptural and what is explicit, i.e. specifically stated in Scripture.
I am not surprised that you would yet reject Mary being body and soul in heaven. It falls completely in line with your belief that she is do different than anyone else. Yet, God found her different from anyone else, so different that He gave to her His Only Begotten Son to bear.
“My soul doth magnify the Lord, for He has done great things for me.”
“How is that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?”
She was hardly no different than any other mortal and it is only pride that would lead someone to say she is.
Enough said. We will agree only when the Holy Spirit leads you to accept the truth.
Again with the Trinity. Yes, there are Scripture that support the doctrine of God as three distinct persons. It is not clear as you might like to believe however. Heresies and misconceptions of the doctrine abound and have nearly from the beginning. The formal doctrine was declared by the Church at the Council of Chalcedon and all Christians believe the doctrine as it was defined there.
Deny all you want, it doesn’t change the facts.
Again, nearly every Christian worships on Sunday, and it is called the Lord’s Day after John’s Revelation. Say what you like, that Christians meet on Sunday to worship and break bread is Scriptural. And that nearly every Christian adheres to this is because of the Church. YOU may not chose to do such, but millions of Christians do and it is one thing the “reformers” kept, but not the only thing.
On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread,... Acts 20:7
and Paul tells the Corintians, 16 1 With regard to the collection in favor of the saints, follow the rules that I gave to the churches of Galatia. 2 Every Sunday, let each of you put aside what you are able to spare, so that no collection need be made when I come.
Christians met on Sunday in Paul’s time and he tells them it is best to make their donations for the church then. And so collections are taken in church services, ALL churches which hold their worship on Sunday take collections.
The new Christians still went to temple though. But, we are never told in Scripture when that practice stopped, but we know it did and Sunday was the day Christians met and worshiped the Lord.
Deny all you like, but those are the facts.
As for Revelation and the Woman. There is much debate about her and what that passage means. No one seems to agree. Has it happened already, when will it happen if it hasn’t.
Talk of the Rapture, talk of the Rapture being absolutely impossible or non Scriptural. I can see why there is so much confusion. No one agrees. Some are looking to literal interpretation, as you do regarding the wilderness and the flood and some say it is all symbol.
So, I will not try to wade into such a morass.
I cannot know what is to come and that is okay with me. Jesus said no one knows the hour except the Father.
I stand by Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant, as the woman spoken of in Genesis and as the Woman clothed with the sun. All describe her.
Since neither protestants nor Catholics or nearly anyone that I can see can agree on what it all means following that, I will leave that to the scholars.
On this alone, the woman in Revelations, I will have to admit that I am not sure what to believe. And you may make of that whatever you like.
Hey, that sounds familiar. ;o)
Excellent point and post!
I agree, This was true on both sides of the split. Martin Luther was also stubborn.
One positive point is the RCC grew from the experience. Did not the reformation bring about the council of Trent? IOW did not the RCC reform as well shortly after that time?
Martin certainly did not do anything about replacement theology. He had disdain for the Jews based on his writings.
Did Martin experience repentance or merely reformation? I do not know but, Thank God, God knows.
He would do well on the open FR religious forum.
In my Lutheran background many people, including me in the past, idolize Martin Luther.
I am aware, but thought I would play along.
Giving the right answer would have so ruined the fun for her?him? wouldn’t it have?
Now, I must be told the right answer or give the right answer for the game to continue.
Which option will be chosen?
Now that there is funny! My comment was in response to your very personal and continuous haranguing of Quix. Do you actually think nobody is wise to that bait and switch game??? Let me see, what was in Sister Katherine Marie used to say? Oh yeah, "Clean off your own doorstep before you start cleaning off someone else's."
I'm not all that fond of some of your peeps. As far as hate, the only person who has even said they hate someone they have never met has been...who?
Been there, done that.
