My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

What did Mary say that was false?
When she thought He was crazy or the 3 days at the temple?

I think both times show a lack of Faith. Is that something less than "full of grace"?

I don't think we're supposed to understand the "mechanics". The way I view these "Formulae" is that if we don't cleave to them, our theology/belief will break down down the road.

BTW I think Chalcedon is two natures (and I'm too tired to find out what that word is) in one hypostasis. There's KIND of an anlogy but at a lower level, if that makes sense.

I think that Muslims exploit the anger and disenfranchisement that many blacks in prison feel. It is what the Muslims do.

I am not sure how one counteracts the appeal to the wounded nature of many of these men in prison.

Christians offer them love and forgiveness, but if they feel righteous in their anger, those are things they may not want.
But, Christianity also says they are responsible for themselves and must make the changes needed to be a productive part of society.

Victimology is a potent lure especially to those who do not see an easier way to explain why they have ended up where they are.

They see themselves as empowered by the brotherhood of Islam rather than pawns in a power struggle.

We have seen the alternate realities that you have posted here over the years. Once again, you are on top of your game - congratulations.

My game as you call it is the bible, the written word of God...And it proves your religion wrong...You can't answer a single biblical question posed to you...

Some of us have passed on from the practice run to the real one in Matthew 28.

Naw, you guys are still practicing and you won't make the team at the rate you are going...

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

All things Jesus taught you??? Heal the lepers, raise the dead...

You're just fooling yourself...But you don't fool those who believe what Jesus said...You don't do any of that stuff that Jesus said to do in the Gospels...

It's our Church and our lexicon. To us and for us it means what we say it means. You don't have to like it, but are completely powerless to do anything about it.

LOLOL...Hey, thanks for the honest answer...I never thought I'd see one of you guys admit it...

But one of your partners in crime says it is NOT your church...It belongs to Christ (and which christ is that?)...

Firstly, please show me in the Bible where Mary is called the Mother of God. She is called the "mother of Jesus"(John 2:1; Acts 1:14), but never the mother of God.

Just as Christ's human nature had no father, His divine nature had no mother.

And I know. Off we go to the Councils for our answers to the tradition of calling Mary the Mother of God.

In the meantime, I'm saying the RCC cannot have it both ways. If she is the mother of God, she must be present in the Eucharist, when the ACTUAL BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST are changed from wafers and wine. And don't try that "we are the body of Christ" on me. You know, or should know, that that is the Spiritual Body of Christ, being formed even as we speak. Your church couldn't perform a decent Eucharist if you actually meant the spiritual body of Christ and not the literal body of Christ. Half the spiritual body of Christ is in purgatory right now, according to your teachings. You know and I know that it is the literal blood and body of Christ, seated at the right hand of God, that you claim the wafers and wine are turned into at Mass.

Some earlier mentioned the green-eyed monster.

I tend to think it is more that a protestant must reject Mary or they will become Catholic and it is scary to move out of what you have been taught and believed all of your life.

I respect that and understand it. I only decry the sometimes terribly crude and offensive manner of their protests.

They are almost like a hair shirt aren’t they? We offer up the irritations they create in us and pray that God will use it as the oyster does the sand to create a pearl.

We must accept them out of love for God and Jesus, and pray for them.

"And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." -Acts 2:42

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

"For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be the glory forever. Amen." -Romans 11:36

I doubt any of us whom you casually call "Paulicians" hold to the same doctrines of this seventh century minority. Rather, it appears it is only a "spitwad" that gets launched whenever the epistles of Paul are used to straighten up misrepresentation of the Gospel.

Appears to be a Catholic site, or at least a Catholic sympathy site...

I put no faith in Catholic history...Many of these so called heretics were only guilty of refusing to bow to the popes and the Catholic religion...Of course Catholic history never mentions this...

And the Catholics were pure animals; savages...Read Foxe's book of Martyrs...

"Two Christs? Hardly. He was/is 100% man. He was/is 100% God."

The proper term is "theandric". Why use a dozen words when one will more precisely convey the concept?

Actually, Catholics and Lutherans and Presbyterians and Pentecostals and Baptists are Christians. Your group isn’t and we know that — however much it tries to play taqqiyah, it fails

After reading and believing the scriptures, I find it very clear that no one in your Catholic Cult is qualified to determine who is a Christian...

HaHaHa...When I was young, it was an insult to a Catholic to mistakenly call him/her a Christian...How things change...

Exodus 20:4-6 says nothing about worshiping other gods, but it does explicitly state that people are not to BOW DOWN to carved images.

Exodus 20:4-6 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

I've seen plenty of Catholics bowing down before statues of Mary, Joseph and whoever else there was a statue of, lighting candles in front of them.

Obviously God knew the semantics games people would play and focused on the actions.

I object to your putting Mary into the “family” that thought Jesus might be crazy. Scripture does not anywhere say that Mary thought that or said that.

While it is true that Mary is mentioned further along as one who was waiting outside to speak to Jesus, Scripture does not mention why she was there or what she was going to say. Scripture also does not say that Jesus talked to them.

Could one think that they brought Mary because they thought they had a better chance of speaking with Jesus if she was there?

Or could one think that Mary went with them because she heard what they were saying and was there to support and defend Jesus? Or that she was going to ask Jesus to allay their fears and dispute their charges?

Scripture is clear on none of the details or the conclusion to the event.

As for Mary, is it your contention that Mary who was visited by and Angel, who told her she would bear the Son of the Most High God, who gave the glorious Magnificat, the Canticle of Mary thought that Jesus was crazy?

She had seen what the angel promised come true. She had heard the prophecy of Simeon and of Anna and she wondered at their words. She knew at the wedding at Cana that what He could do and witnessed Him doing it.

And you say she was part of the posse that thought Jesus was crazy!

How far will you go to discredit Mary in your zeal to discredit the Church?
