Long Island Episcopal Bishop Lawrence Provenzano has put his foot down against gay clergy who residing in homosexual relationships, and has given a nine month deadline for them to either get married or stop living together, according to the News Observer.
I need to be mindful that the church has always asked people to live in committed monogamous, faithful relationships. I wont allow heterosexual clergy to live in a rectory or church housing without the benefit of marriage. When one puts it in that context, then you see how it all begins to make sense, said Provenzano.
Reverend Christopher Hofer, pastor of the Episcopal Church of St. Jude agrees with Provenzano, I think his statement was not only fair, but beyond generous. It gives people time, acknowledging that theres a financial component involved and recognizing that some may not choose to live together.
Now that the state is recognizing civil marriage, we as priests, perhaps deacons too, who are in committed relationships, have a choice: we either live what we preach to become civilly married or we live apart, he said.
According to SRN news, no other Episcopal dioceses in states with same-gender marriage have set an explicit deadline for gay clergy to marry their live in partners.

He sure has staked out the high moral ground there.

It's not just a good idea.
It's THE LAW!
How naive. Most of them have “open” “marriages.” The reprehensible Dan Savage (he of the licking doorknobs of conservatives when he is sick) has written a little screed about heteros getting with the program and having open marriage as well!
So does the Episcopal Church allow homosexual marriage? I guess I’m behind the times. I didn’t think that any recognized mainstream denomination allowed homosexual marriage, or homosexual partnerships in any way. When did all of this happen?
Interesting. Gay rights have consequences. Now they’re going to have to work hard to make gay divorce easier and more painless, since it’s OK now for even a bishop to get divorced and remarried in the Episcopal Church.
Any “church” with homosexual leaders is no church. It is a social club run as a business disguised as a church.
I find this gay marriage, gay clergy business just so sick. Maybe all the blatant immorality and the irreversible social and financial downward spiral portend a new dark age to just ‘clear the buffers’. It has happened before. We just seem to have no power to right our listing bark.
Wow. Way to take a stand there dude. /s
What a surprise when they moral leaders of that church find out that the fudge-packers don't want to get married - they just want to bugger evertything in sight.
They'll have to rethink that whole “gays are just like you and me” theory they've been promoting.
Now that the state is recognizing civil marriage, we as priests, perhaps deacons too, who are in committed relationships, have a choice: we either live what we preach to become civilly married or we live apart, he said.”
Statist slaves. If one thinks that gay marriage is possible, why wait for the gubberment’s seal of approval before you begin to allow or require gays to be married?
“Sorry Rev. Dave and Steven, but we couldn’t recognize your relationship as a marriage before the state gave us permission to do so... We hold what the state thinks about the subject as being more important than what our faith teaches about the subject.”
Freegards
How can people who ignore major parts of the Bible and rewrite it claim to be “Christian”? All Christian Bibles say the same thing and you never glorify sin and corrupt the young and impressionable and sexually confuse them at ages where they are trying to make sense of the world. It perverts their worldview and destroys common sense and reason.
We live in America—”Right Reason according to Nature” is the fundamental philosophy which permeates the Constitution—Natural Rights come from Natural Law Theory and God’s laws. Can they not read?
>>They’ll have to rethink that whole gays are just like you and me theory they’ve been promoting.<<
.
Too late for that. No one would dare to propose that being gay is different from being heterosexual.
Are you being sarcastic?
“Brothers and sisters in Christ, I have good news and I have bad news.
“The good news is that now, in the eyes of the State of New York, you’re just like everybody else.
“The bad news is that now, in the eyes of the State of New York, you’re just like everybody else. Get those certificates in soon, now.”
And how do they propose to enforce their edict, having themselves disemboweled their canons?
And folks wonder why more and more Episcopal congregations are converting enmasse to Roman Catholicism?
Actually, many of the Episcopalians I know are ex-Catholics including several priests. They are more into bible study.
Is this from The Onion?
