The founders of this remarkable republic often thought and wrote about the practice of virtue generally and self-control specifically, two things long lost in this modern American culture of self.

Montesquieu concluded that the best form of government is a self-governing one, and yet it is also the most difficult to maintain because it demands a virtuous populace. Which is why ours is in such bad shape.
Good essay.

"And perhaps saddest of all, as John Howard notes, virtue is something that can be acquired, like learning to speak a cultures language. Once inculcated, however, it needs to be continuously reinforced by the cultural elements of the society." Every time someone says that social issues don't matter and that we Conservatives should stay away from them, remember the sentences above. Losing the culture war is what has almost lost us our Republic.

Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit in the New Testament.
Self control means you control yourself rather than somebody else controlling you.
Controlling yourself is freedom.
A nation where enough people manifest the fruit of the Spirit will among other blessings be a free nation.

Montesquieu noted that each citizen in a self-governing state must voluntarily abide by certain essential standards of conduct: lawfulness, truthfulness, honesty, fairness, respect for the rights and well-being of others,
How Ironic. I'm listening to the Chicago Police Radio Calls now.
Seems like none of
'Holder's People' learned that from mommy. Or auntie, granny, or their parole officer.
No wonder every 'big city' urban area is screwed up.
(they have 'standards', but they're all low)
