No, the James cited as the Lord's brother (who wrote the book of James) was not one of the 12.
He was the James of 1 Cor 15 who came to the Lord later...
"Who is my mother, and who are my cousins or stepfather's children from a previous marriage? Here are my mother and my cousins or stepfather's children from a previous marriage. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my cousin or stepfather's son or daughter from a previous marriage, and mother."
I prefer the King James version.

Even if your position is correct, which it seems to be, what difference does it make? How are you defining virginity? Do you mean Joseph never had sex with Mary after the birth of Jesus? Hard to believe and why would it matter that he did? I think this is the point you start to vere off into “Mary worship”.
You made a good point about the people mentioned as not being siblings of Jesus. This still doesn't mean he didn't have any other siblings. Also it doesn't really prove your idea of “The Perpetual Virginity of Mary”. You only addressed some claims against the idea.
If I claim that the temperature in hell is 99 degrees, just because you can't “prove” I'm wrong, doesn't make me right.
We really don’t need to keep beating on it because the question is just not that important to us. It distracts from the Gospel message of redemption through the Grace of God - which is what all Brothers and Sisters in Christ should be proclaiming to the lost world.
Absolutely great article.
Too long to take in all at once, so I’ll comment only on the supposed debunking of “James”.
The problem with the argument is that there is nothing to tie “James the Less” to “James the brother of Jesus”. There is no indication that Jesus’ brothers were disciples. So proving that James the Less wasn’t Mary’s son doesn’t prove anything, because James the Less isn’t named as Jesus’ brother.
Thanks for the ping to this excellent article, and some really good Catholic posts.
Thanks narses, good thread, good posters.
A very great post. It’s so clear and easy to understand; if you’re not fighting it.
I have always figured that marys husband had maybe been married before and had children much older than Jesus, but after reading the comment it really does make sense, at any rate i think we can be assured that Jesus was mary,s only child.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Her progenitors were chosen and guided by the Holy Spirit
Her mother, (Saint) Anne was made aware that her daughter, Mary, was the one chosen to Immaculately conceive, and carry in her womb, the infant Jesus, the Redeemer.
From the moment of her conception, Mary was and remained pure, innocent, and without sin.
After the 'announcement' from Gabriel, Mary only desired to be 'married' to God.
Obeying God's wishes, she married (Saint) Joseph.
Mary was an adept seamstress, and oft made clothes to be given to the poor. When women would request a garment sewn by Mary, solely for the sake of owning such a garment, she politely refused.
Mary died thirteen years and two months after Christ's Ascension.
Before she died, all the Apostles, excepting Thomas, who arrived after her death, were present.
Before dying, Mary blessed each Apostle according to Divine instruction.
Mary was interred in a cave which was situated below the cave of Jesus' interment.
Upon death Mary"s soul ascended immediately to Paradise.
Later, her spirit, accompanied by Angels, collected her human body and again ascended to Heaven, where Mary joined her Son and the Father.
Mary, by decree of God, was named Mother of the Church.
Ave Maria.
Aside: Many will scoff at, and attempt to deny, what I've posted above. If you do not believe it now, you will at some point in the future, be shown it to be true.
Also, we, Roman-Catholics, do not 'worship' Maria. Though we do, unabashedly, love her, and oft ask that she intercedes on our behalf to her Son.
