If it wasn’t for the Mormons, Prop 8 wouldn’t have passed in California. They were the ones that pushed the issue. They were the ones who the gays protested and ridiculed.
This is simply not true as stated. What the mormons did do was use their PR machine for self promotion. There were hundreds of churches and thousands of people who worked on this issue without self promotion. It is because of the lds self promotion that they were targeted as the group responsible for the passage.

I could say the same thing about Evangelicals and Catholics. If it wasn't for them, Prop 8 wouldn't have passed.
I could say the same thing about minority voters, who carried Prop 8 -- vs. white voters who were more likely to vote against it. If it wasn't for minority voters, Prop 8 wouldn't have passed.
