“Members of a socialist or communist group” [Archbishop Gomez skips annual May Day rally]
California Catholic Daily ^ | May 5, 2011

Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez snubbed the leftist organizers of the annual May Day Rally in Los Angeles this year and did not attend – unlike his predecessor, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who always went out of his way to participate.

“Only a few thousand people showed up for the nine-block march that started early and ended quickly,” the Los Angeles Times reported. “Los Angeles police declined to issue a crowd estimate, but marchers didn't even fill the intersection of Broadway and 1st Street, where the demonstration ended.”

Most of the marchers, said the Times “were union members -- particularly from the Service Employees International Union, which turned out hundreds of people -- or members of a socialist or communist group.”

That compares to a crowd estimate of 60,000 at last year’s march, from which pro-abortion, pro-same-sex marriage Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa tweeted, “At the May Day rally downtown with Cardinal Roger Mahony and 100k other supporters of comprehensive immigration reform.”

Cardinal Mahony even wrote about last year’s event in a May 2, 2010 entry on his blog: “Downtown Los Angeles became a sea of joyous and hopeful people on May Day this year. In a stunning turnout of people of all backgrounds, ages, and affiliations Broadway Street from Temple to Olympic resounded with song, chants, and spirited encouragement for all immigrants in our country.”

Newspapers featured photos of Cardinal Mahony, smiling as he worked his way through last year’s crowds.

According to an account published on the website of a group calling itself Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER), participants in this year’s rally included, among others, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, the Multi-ethnic Immigrant Workers Organizing Network,

Note: all Christian brothers and sister. This article aims to get Christians to fight each other — that’s all that the left aims for

The Vatican ambassador said that ‘Social Justice’ is About Relationships, Not Socialism

Peter Cardinal Turkson, President of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, has a message for Catholics in America, particularly those involved in social justice ministry, that could put a damper on the political machinations of the Shadow Party.

The message? “Social justice” is about “relationships,” not “socialism.”

He went on to say

It would be useful if we just observed our sense of justice as our ability to fulfill the demands of the relationships in which we stand.

This is in contrast to socialism, he explained, which is an ideology in which private property and private interests are totally placed in the service of government policies. What the Pope proposes in ‘Caritas in Veritate,’ said Cardinal Turkson, is ‘achieving the common good without sacrificing personal, private interests, aspirations and desires.’

Cardinal Turkson said the Council was also surprised that the Pope’s concept of the ‘gift,’ was perceived in some circles as encouraging government welfare handouts. In ‘Caritas in Veritate,’ Pope Benedict described the concept of “gift” as a way to understand God’s love for men and women in his gift of life and his gift of Jesus.

One of the key principles of Catholic social thought is known as the principle of subsidiarity. This tenet holds that nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be. This principle is a bulwark of limited government and personal freedom. It conflicts with the passion for centralization and bureaucracy characteristic of the Welfare State

You may remember that Pope John Paul II worked closely with President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to bring down communism in the Soviet Union and Marxist governments in Latin America. With the worldwide Left now in such kinship with Islam, and with no modern-day Reagan or Thatcher in sight, Pope Benedict XVI certainly has his work cut out for him. If they recognize that America has become polarized, perhaps America’s Catholic bishops will bite the bullet and commit themselves to following in the footsteps of the just-beatified Pope John Paul II…to morally undermine the Left as he morally undermined the Soviet Union.

Ignore the thread and let's focus on praising God.

Thanks Mark!

seems like a broken clock can be right twice a day.

Or perhaps the problem is that if you google random words without reading the article......

” Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez snubbed the leftist organizers of the annual May Day Rally in Los Angeles this year and did not attend

Good news, Palladin -- as you can see, the new bishops are the right men to clean up!

Take heart, The Church is us and we are increasing in Faith and orthodoxy -- the past is the past and we shall not forget the criminals, but we shall remember the true priests as well.

Watch The Church continue onwards, holding true to the Faith.

I second that - could this be a sign of the practice of more traditional Catholic theology in CA than the PC, libtard crap of the past?
(There’s nothing like going to Mass in CA with California Catholics...sheesh!)

Romanism is all about Identity politics.

We see it’s adherents express it nearly everyday on this forum.

"Romanism is all about Identity politics."

What is it with your form of faith that makes offensive and derogatory terms so acceptable in this forum? Is it because some actually have no Christianity and no conscience?

Oh, and you can take your hands out of your ears and hear the good news Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez snubbed the leftist organizers of the annual May Day Rally in Los Angeles this year and did not attend

Good news -- but how did your group like the parade? Was it handing out sandwiches and cookies?

Thank goodness for Alex posting this thread showing the Catholic Church cleaning house and rejecting the leftists. It was surprising seeing it come from Alex, but hey, a broken clock is right twice a day.

This is just like what we read in Caritas in Veritae

17 Integral human development presupposes the responsible freedom of the individual and of peoples: no structure can guarantee this development over and above human responsibility. The “types of messianism which give promises but create illusions”[38] always build their case on a denial of the transcendent dimension of development, in the conviction that it lies entirely at their disposal. This false security becomes a weakness, because it involves reducing man to subservience, to a mere means for development, while the humility of those who accept a vocation is transformed into true autonomy, because it sets them free.

Oh let it go. There is a branch of certain religions that require it's members to drag all other religions down to its own level, in order to make the the members feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I believe it's called Tiny Wee-Weeism. Kinda sad, sure, but best let them do as they please.

I’m confused. I thought he told everybody to ignore it but then he’s thanking you for it? Must have something to do with Subsidiarity.

I don't know whether t_c even shares our christian faith.

We see nothing shared about whether he believes in:

  1. a Triune God: Father-Son-Holy Spirit who created the entire universe, all that is see and unseen
  2. Jesus Christ, Lord, God and Savior, 100% man and 100% God, the Word incarnate, born of the virgin Mary, who suffered, died, was buried and rose again from the dead
  3. the Holy Spirit as part of the ONE Triune God

Strangely enough for folks who are so interested in Catholicism, they have a lack of interest in their own group -- perhaps it's not Christian?

No wonder that they won't say if they are Christian (Catholic/Orthodox/Lutheran/Anglican/Baptist/Presbyterian/Pentecostal/Methodist etc. etc.)

It is good that Caritas in Veritae reiterates the Church position
.Not only does the situation of poverty still provoke high rates of infant mortality in many regions, but some parts of the world still experience practices of demographic control, on the part of governments that often promote contraception and even go so far as to impose abortion. In economically developed countries, legislation contrary to life is very widespread, and it has already shaped moral attitudes and praxis, contributing to the spread of an anti-birth mentality; frequent attempts are made to export this mentality to other States as if it were a form of cultural progress.
