VATICAN CITYThe May 1 beatification of the late Pope John Paul II is an occasion for the Holy See to bask in the aura of a pontiff widely seen as a modern Catholic hero. But a high-profile event involving another European institution, the House of Windsor, is stealing the Vatican's thunder. The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London on April 29, two days before the beatification ceremony, is dominating news coverage around the world, leaving less time for the late pope.

aye, the Brits are making too big a fuss over the entire Royal wedding, down to whether her ring will be of gold from one Welsh mine or not and what kind of knickers she’ll be wearing. over-kill
Same thing happened when Mother Teresa died on Sept. 5, 1997, five days after Princess Diana. Many eyes were still on the Princess, leaving Mother Teresa’s passing somewhat in the shadows.
Yep, I could not believe the stuff that has been written up about the royal couple, in the British news sources, some just to fill in empty space.
Has Prince even been relevant since “Purple Rain”?
True, the reason why the date for the beatification for JP2 is this coming this weekend also is because of the feast of Divine Mercy, which is on the first Sunday following Easter, as John Paul II made a part of the Easter season as Jesus directed.
Not that Prince, Prince William. Tell that to the media, who are going ga-ga over that upcoming wedding, and I am not saying “Lady Gaga” here.
Guess I’ve been out of the loop. ;)
Well it will be an interesting post-Easter weekend coming up! ;)
If this wedding is another step in skipping over Prince Charles, it will be a joyful event, and an important one for the future of Western Civilization, IMHO.
Who the monarch of England is can matter a great deal.
The silly hoopla of pop culture notwithstanding..
When I moved here to continental Europe I realized that that is not true. It may matter in the Anglophone world and that too only in the UK, Canada, Australia and to some extent the US and India, but what happens or happened in the UK does not hit the Francophone, Slavic or other worlds too much.
The UK was very important in the 1800s, but it has sunk down in importance, just as the monarchy's role has sunk down in importance. It won't go the way of the Swedish bicycle monarchs, yet, but the monarchy is less and less relevant even in the Anglophone world.
