Not sure about your priest, but belief in the Immaculate conception and the Assumption are not optional. Neither is anything defined by the Magesterium. Your priest is wrong.
Well, I don’t get involved with debates with Protestants. I read what they post and learn and grow in faith. I find them fine Christians.
Then there are the bigots. They don’t act like Christians. I call them “Know Nothings” and they flourish here.
Since it is my day off, I have dinner duty. So I will be happy to cite those lies on this thread, but it will have to wait until after clean up. But if you are impatient, just look at any posting that says Catholics worship Mary. That person is either completely misinformed, or, if they have been corrected in the past on this misinformation, they are a liar.
The first time it is being misinformed and it can happen to anyone. The second time, well, that is where the evil comes in. Then, if you demand that the lie is the truth, that is bigotry. And finally if you cloak it in false righteousness, you get the hypocrisy. (Just like smearing someone and hitting the abuse button when they call you out.)
Belief in those things are pretty universal among Christians....we DO believe that our God came to earth as babe in the womb of Mary and that he became man. I am referring to the Rosary, to Marian groups, to Marian apparitions, etc. ad nauseum. The ONLY time Mary is mentioned during Mass is in direct scriptural readings and homilies on the scriptures and in the Apostle’s Creed. I stand by this.
We understand that YOU dont believe your offering Latria to Mary, but hyperdulia seems fall into the biblical definition of worshiping Idols, for protestants.
So are saying you DO or Don’t believe in the Immaculate conception and Assumption?
The quotations are from others and intended to show an intense reverence for Mary. As quotes, they reflect the speakers feelings. They are, I believe, intended to show her unique relationship with God only and not that Mary is the ‘gate keeper.’ Reading the full Adiutricem made this clear...at least to me.
Ultimately, the Nicene Creed is the statement of Catholic beliefs.
....I said that in the beginning when I posted the Apostle's Creed.
Luke1:26-88
So, people who have no faith in His Word don't believe that God is the God of the living and therefore their intercessors are fellow believers in the next pew.
If someone asserts that those who have died are no longer alive, then Christ lied when He told the thief He would be with Christ in Paradise that very day. It also means that since the ears of the Lord are open to the prayers of the righteous and there are no righteous in this life, then that bit about prayers of the righteous is a lie as well. I never knew pentacoastals thought there were so many lies in His Word. Thanks for pointing that out.
Well played.
To further clarify........Catholics believe Jesus ascended into Heaven, it is NOT required to believe Mary was....though I do realize some do. I am speaking of what the Catholic church teaches as required beliefs....you are mistaken if you think that.
One should never be a Wikipedophile!
I'd be shocked if the first wrong ever happened.
A Papist -
From Merriam Webster:

From the Cambridge Dictionary:
offensive

From the Oxford Dictionary:
chiefly derogatory
a Roman Catholic.
Nobody is insisting that you ask Mary or anyone else to pray for you. But if I choose to ask Mary or another friend to pray for me, it is my choice. There are many threads on FR asking friends for prayers.
interesting term
The Vatican system is huge.
One can find almost any focus &/or excess in some corner of it.
Some excesses are more pervasive than others . . . and in some regions than others.
What a string of hideously WRONG assumptions!
The evidence is sprinkled throughout the archives . . .
And, interestingly . . . until the bowing out for lent, rather rife most any day hereon.
Discerning proddys are keenly aware
that The Vatican speaks out of many sides of its many mouths and fingers about Mary.
The net result still remains
that millions of RC’s have Mary on a pedestal that
SHE HERSELF HATE, DEPLORES.
My point is that after 51 years of Catholic Mass, I have not one single solitary time heard a Catholic Priest utter the slightest derogatory comment about other Christian denominations. Not once. What I have heard them say is that there are many roads to Heaven, and not all of them go through the Catholic Church. An attitude that I cherish and respect.
But when I occasionally attend a service at another Christian denomination, it’s a crap shoot as to whether or not they’re going to bitch and moan about Catholics. I don’t appreciate being insulted while sitting in Church. I’m comfortable in my skin, and I wish that others would be comfortable in theirs.
