Catholic Word of the Day: SPIRITUAL COMMUNION, 03-10-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 03-10-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

The conscious desire to receive Holy Communion, which should precede the actual reception of the sacrament. Spiritual Communion, made in acts of faith and love during the day, is highly recommended by the Church. According to the Catechism of the Council of Trent, the faithful who "receive the Eucharist in spirit" are "those who, inflamed with a lively faith that works in charity, partake in wish and desire of the celestial Bread offered to them, receive from it, if not the entire, at least very great benefits" (On the Eucharist).

When you can't receive for whatever reason, you can always make a spiritual communion.

In a vision, Our Lord showed St. Catherine of Siena two chalices - one of silver and one of gold. He told her that the gold chalice contained her sacramental communions and the silver her spiritual communions -- and that both were very pleasing to Him.

What a wonderful vision.

I could not receive for nearly 8 years. It is so hard, but the prayer for a Spiritual Communion was a life saver.

That is behind me now, but it makes me grateful for every time I can receive now.
