All day long I heard Roman Catholics brag to each other, and anyone else who would listen, what they were giving up for Lent. Seems they were trying to out-pious each other.

Why would it even bother you - the things you people complain about are ridiculous. BTW, I'm giving up sugar.

Good for you! I’m sure you will get an extra jewel in your crown for that. < /sarc>

FWIW, I’m giving up lent. < /sarcx2>

FWIW, I?m giving up lent.

In most western languages and Latin the word we translate as "lent" just means "forty days" (e.g.: quadrigesima). "Lent" is Anglo-Saxon for "spring". It is about the day's LENgThening. The days get longer; we spend more time in the light.

If someone eschews (or is predestined to eschew) spending more time in the light but prefers darkness, then we Catholics will pray that person yet may bask in the light which shines in darkness, which darkness does not comprehend.

Have a blessed springtime.
