No, it doesn't say that. Read it again, please.

It says don't make a graven image. Then it says don't bow down nor worship/serve graven images. Nowhere does it say, "Don't make a graven image that you plan to bow down and worship."

If you're driving down the road and see sign that says "Speed Limit 55" and underneath it says "No U-Turn", do you conclude that means you're not to make a U-turn going 55mph? That would be silly, wouldn't it?

No sillier, though, than saying, "Well it's okay to violate Part A of this commandment as long as you keep Part B."

Quite obviously your interpretation is simply wrong, since just a few chapters later, God commanded Israel to make a number of graven images, including two cherubim. Are you accusing God of being schizophrenic?

Pontius Pilate's Letter to Tiberius Caesar
The Archeological Writings of the Sanhedrin and Talmuds of the Jews, entered into the Congressional Record in the year 1887

One day in passing by the place of Siloe, where there was a great concourse of people, I observed in the midst of the group a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus. This I could easily have suspected, so great was the difference between him and those listening to him. His golden-colored hair and beard gave to his appearance a celestial aspect. He appeared to be about thirty years of age. Never have I seen a sweeter or more serene countenance. What a contrast between him and his hearers, with their black beards and tawny complexions!

If a policeman blocks the road and signals you to make a U-turn, do you conclude that the "No U-Turn" sign no longer means what it says? That you can now make a U-turn on that road anytime you like?

No, God is not "schizophrenic". He is the Supreme Ruler over all the universe. If He prohibits me from making my own graven images, and then He commands me to make graven images of His design, that is His prerogative. And what should I do but obey?

We see His command to not make graven images, and we see His commands from time to time to make graven images according to His instructions. Clear enough, right? So again I ask, where is His command to us to make images of Jesus?

If we can't produce the command, then aren't we placing ourselves above the law when we do so? That's a place which belongs to God, not to us.
