Faith Without Works? Do Calvinists Actually Read the Christian Bible? Is anyone as mystified as I am at this contradictory and unbiblical Calvinist Sola Fide idea that faith without works is sufficient for salvation? How can Calvinists reject James Chapter 2 which states that; What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? (James 2:14) and "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). To do so is antithetical to Scripture.
The Calvinist rejection of James is at best substitutional, permitting Calvinists to conclude that works naturally follow from and are only a result of true faith thus requiring no conscious commitment or consideration. The result is a negation of the call to Beatitude and a rejection of the obligations of the Second Greatest Commandment issued by Jesus Himself.
Borrowing from Hinduism many fringe Calvinists actually practice a form of the Brahiminst caste system in which they profess that their own Salvation was secure from the beginning of time and no obligation exists toward the less fortunate and needy because God rejected their election from the beginning of time.
The substitution of actual, contextual Scripture for the more flattering personal interpretations is a return to the Gnostic heresies that the Church successfully rejected more than a thousand years earlier. They attempt to seek truth through Scripture on their own despite the admonition of Peter who stated; But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation (2 Peter 1:20).
Faith alone is insufficient. Adam and Eve had faith yet fell. They spoke directly with God yet succumbed to sin. What about Paul, whom many Calvinists give greater credence than Jesus, when he says; "And if I should have prophesy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could move mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." (1 Corinthians 13: 2).
Perhaps the citations some will more closely identify with; the demons whom Jesus expelled.
"And behold they [the demons] cried out saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?" (Matt 8: 29).
The demons had faith certainly equal to that of the Calvinists. Not only do they profess that Jesus is the Son of God, but they also have a profound knowledge of Scripture and profess belief in the final judgment. Peter didnt profess that Christ is the Son of God in Matthew 16:16-- eight chapters later. Why didnt Jesus didn't make the demons the rock on which He built His Church? He required Works to build His Church.

Excellent post ! It was the principles of Calvinism that underlay the constitution .
I know that many do not like to consider that.. but the freedoms we enjoy come from an understanding of the sovereignty of God and the sin nature of men..

"Then a lot of eminent historians must have been and must be lunatics in your book."If anyone thinks that the following three paragraphs which comprise the mayflower Compact in its entority, have any significant legal precedent they are lunatics. It was simply a relinquishing of any right of British citizenship and a pledge of submission and obedience to the leadership of the colony.
In the name of God, Amen. We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc.

" Thank you! It took 47 posts before the most important element of salvation was mentioned...the shed blood of Jesus Christ. "
That's because, without the shedding of the Blood of Jesus Christ ( Yeshua Messiah ) then ? there is no atonement, no remission of sins.
Works ? Merits ? keeping the law ? can not ever justify a man/woman, and " works " or merits , keeping the law cannot remove sins.
( * For what ? the high priest came to GOD every year and said " Ok God, here on our works and merits, keeping the law, you must accept them to let us in " ....
no, no, no, it was a spotless lamb, a sacrifice that was acceptable to GOD.* )
What was the need to bring a yearly sacrifice to GOD every year for the sins of the nation if keeping the law would make you right, and keep you right with GOD ?
because ?
it can't, and never will.
GOD said ( this is not our view or opinion, but, God's demands )
God said, God said, God said " that the soul that sins must die. "
Jesus Christ was that spotless lamb that GOD accepted in our stead.
Jesus Christ kept the law, for he came to fulfill the law in us and for us in his life, his death, and his Resurrection.
What can take away my sin ?
Nothing but the Blood of Jesus Christ ( Yeshua Messiah ).
These Jamesnisers love to quote what James says " faith without works is dead " to prove that we must do works for Salvation.
They forget to tell the people the rest of that chapter.
Context, Context, Context... read the fine print so the Con-Artist won't con you, read the full text so these religious con-artist won't rob you of the " Free Grace " that GOD offers of the gift of Salvation.
James chapter 2
1. My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
Note/Comments:
( * James is asking, does Jesus Christ have respect of people whether they are rich ? poor ? educated ? non-educated ? Jew ? or Greek ? * )
2. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3. And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
Note/Comments:
( * Yes, there were people who saw the rich people come into the church and gave them the best places and seats in the church, and told the poor that they should take the bad or lower places or seats , James is saying, this should not be among the saints, Christians * )
4. Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
NOTE:Comments:
( * what do we have here ? James is rebuking those who favor the rich folks over the poor folks, and rebuking those who " oppress the poor ".)
James call those who favor the rich over the poor, and oppress the poor " partial, and become " Judges of Evil thoughts " .
( well, well, the truth is coming out )
5. Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6. But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
Note/Comments:
( * once again, James is rebuking those who " despise the poor.
7.Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
Note/Comment:
( * do they ? that you esteem, honor, mock and blaspheme the very name of Jesus Christ ? * )
8. If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:
Note/Comment:
( * James is saying, if you do and fulfill the the royal golden rule that Jesus Christ gave us, to love your neighbor as yourself, you do very well and are honored.* )
9. But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
Note/Comment:
( James says, but ? if you discriminate between people, discriminated between whether they are rich or poor, educated or non-educated, so on and so on, you commit sin, and are convicted as the same as those who are condemned by the law as transgressors)
10. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
( * The law keepers, works keepers, merits based Salvationers should love this verse * )
Note/Comment
( * James who is under the influence of the Holy Spirit, is saying, that ?
Those who live, who think that their Salvation is earned by keeping the law, that their right standing with GOD is by keeping the law,
then ?
If you live by the law, you must keep every part of the law.
If you break the law ? or offend in one " jot " or " tittle " or letter " of the law, then ? you are guilty of breaking all the law " * )
11. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
Note/Comment:
( * James is talking to the law keepers in this verse.
That they are " hypocrites " in that ? if in one part of the law they keep the law, but, in another part ? they break it, then, therefore, they are guilty of breaking the whole law of GOD.
For James said before that those who live by the law, shall keep all the law, and that, if they break just one part ( jot, tittle, or letter of the law ) of the law, they are guilty of breaking " ALL " the law, i.e. Phony Hypocritical law keepers.
Who pretend to be " Godly " but, on the inside are:( John chapter 23 verse 27 " Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. " ).
The teachers of works, of the law are phony religious fakes, white washed tombs full of dead men ( dead works ) bones. * )
12. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
Note/Comment:
( * so ? James is saying here, that ? if you live by the law, works ? a merit based Salvation ? ,then ? don't just speak it, but, you must " DO IT " and those who keep the law will be judged by the law ( the law of Grace ) liberty.
They will be judged by Jesus Christ himself, you phony hypocrites, white washed tombs who are full of dead men's bones ( dead works )* )
13. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Note/Comments:
( * James makes a very interesting statement here, for they ( the law keepers, works folks, merit folks, will be judged by him , i.e. " HE " , who is " he " , that is Jesus Christ himself, that who is James is talking about here.
For Jesus Christ will have no mercy on the law keepers, merit keepers, works keepers who have shown no mercy, he shall judge them with no mercy, for they had no mercy, they showed no mercy.* )
14. What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
Note/Comments:
( * James says , your words, your profession of faith in Jesus Christ is of no profit to you, who claim to be a christian, but, show no mercy to the poor, but, rather show esteem towards the rich, the worldly things, or the ways of the world.
You profession of faith in Christ is in vain, if you do not love one another, your profession of your faith in Christ is all in vain , and on top of that, you deny the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. * )
15. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16. And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17. Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Note/Comments:
( What is James basically saying here ? he is saying, put your money where your mouth is, don't just say what you believe, live it, put your words into action, motion.
Can't get water out of the well until you pump the pump that brings the water to the top.
Spring up oh well, within my Soul.* )
18. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Note/Comments:
( A lot of people dream of doing wonderful things in life, doing wonderful things for GOD, and have great faith, but ? until they take the first step and leap of faith, they are going to still sit in that chair and keep dreaming, keep hoping for years, and say " what if " , and miss their opportunity of blessing or GOD using them.
Put your words, your faith into action, motion, then it will be real moving faith.
Faith without taking the necessary steps to put it into action, motion is dead faith, a dream or faith that get's nowhere.* )
19. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Note/Comments:
( * a water pump that does not get the action of pumping water is not going to draw water for you, got to put your faith into action, motion * )
21. Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Note/Comments:
( * Abraham was justified by works in of it's self, but, faith, faith that was put into action, motion, Abraham was acting on what GOD had told him.* )
22. Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
Note/Comments:
( * Once again, it was not works, alone, that made Abraham right in God's eyes, it was his faith alone, that was put into action, motion, what GOD had told Abraham " Moved " Abraham into action, motion by faith to do what GOD told him to do* )
23. And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Note/Comments:
( * don't see the word " Works " here, only see " believed " .. for Abraham " believed GOD " and it was accounted onto him , imputed unto him for righteousness.
What word has the connotation of " believe " ? Faith ? or " Works " .... Faith is more closely in relation to " believe " ...* )
24. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Note/Comments:
( * How can we reconcile what Paul and others have said in the bible in comparing this verse and statement ?
There are other parts of the bible that tells us that " For we are saved by Grace, through faith, and that not of ourselves " there are other parts of the bible tells us ( read the first 3 chapters of the book of Galatians ) that the law can not save us.
At least ? James didn't deny that we are also justified by faith, he said, only , in other words, there must be some living faith that must be put into motion for it to be living faith.* )
25. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
Note/Comments:
Rehab acted on what she believed, she didn't know the law of God, for she was part of a gentile nation, how could she have known the law of GOD for her to keep and be justified ?
James is talking about something else here.
Rehab heard the news, the messengers " reports " about this nation of Israel in how they defeated their enemies, in how the true GOD, the GOD of Israel was on their side.
So Rehab knew these were the chosen people of GOD and wanted a part in on it.
So ? she listened and believed the 2 spies that were hidden in her rooftop and only asked the 2 spies to save her and her family when Israel comes to take Jerico.
She believed the report of the nation of Israel and the GOD of Israel and reached ( action, motion ) out in faith to asked to 2 spies that when Israel comes, that her family and her be saved. * )
26. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Note/Comments:
( * your words, your dreams, your faith, without putting your words into action ? then ? it's empty speech, a dream that is not taken seriously, and it's only empty talk ? a dream that is not followed up on, is just a dead dream.
A water pump to draw out water from the well is not put into action, or motion, is a pump that will not draw water, it is dead.* ).

" The smug elect Brahmins of Calvinism look down on the lower Castes (Methodists, Pentecostals, Lutherans, orthodoxy etc) and consider it all to be karma. "
Yeah, in " your " own eyes, and in your own wisdom .
With that frame of thinking, then ? I guess you would say that even Israel borrowed from the eastern religions and look down on those " other " nations because they were the elect, chosen people of God, in which ? they were.
Your argument is bogus.
How do you feel , that , I ? as a Messianic Jew, who believes in Jesus Christ ( Yeshua Messiah ) also agrees with some points of Calvinism ?
Yes, I am a Messianic Jew... you have a problem with Jews ?
Actually ? the truth is ? ..... It's those who practice the law, keeping the law, those who think their " good works, and " merits " are those who are arrogant and as you say " Smug " .
It's you law keepers and merit folks who think that your above everyone else because in your pride you think that your good works and merits earn your way to GOD ( quite actually, your own self made, man made righteousness stinks in the nose of GOD, GOD rejects it ).
To: Cronos
" Calvinists deny Genesis and that God created man good "
That's a bold face lie.
Many Calvinist do not believe that.
Adam and Eve were perfect in their being, GOD had created them perfect until Sin,i.e. the fall happened.
To: Cronos
( * Yet, we also know that:
1. Scripture tells us in Eze 33:12-16 that people can lose their salvation * )
Really ? compared to Isaiah chapter where God declares that it is He who will heal the backslider.
The backslider can't heal himself, it is God who will heal them of their wayward ways.
This is before Jesus Christ, this was man keeping the law in the Old Testament.
When we come to Christ, we are imputed with his righteousness, not our own.
So ? is God a Indian giver ?
Will God take back the righteousness that was imputed to us in Christ from us ?
Isaiah chapter 57
14. And it will be said:
" Build up, build up, prepare the road! "
Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.
15. For this is what the high and exalted One says he who lives forever, whose name is holy: I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Note/Comments:
( * Blessed are the poor in spirit , for their's is the kingdom of Heaven ( those who don't trust in their own righteiousnes, their own works, their own prideful, man made, self righteiousness, for GOD resist the proud, but, gives Grace to the humble ).
The poor in spirit are those who know they are un-done, who have no merit in of themselves.* )
16. I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of me the very people I have created.
17. I was enraged by their sinful greed; I punished them, and hid my face in anger, yet they kept on in their willful ways.
18. I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israels mourners, 19. creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near, says the LORD. And I will heal them.
20. But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.
21. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked.

How is that even possible? Give me an example. Wouldnt confessing Jesus as Lord indicate that they were elect?
To: American Constitutionalist
Calvin writes: He has plenty of reasons for comfort as he realises that the devil and all the ungodly are reined in by God, so that they cannot conceive, plan or carry out any crime, unless God allows it, indeed commands it. They are not only in bondage to him, but are forced to serve him. It is the Lords prerogative to enable the enemys rage and to control it at will, and it is in his power to decide how far and how long it may last, so that wicked men cannot break free and do exactly what they want.... (The Institutes of Christian Religion, Book I, Ch.17, Sect. 10)
Sounds like Calvin admitted that God created evil, then denied it, then admitted it, then denied it... as he went through his life. Certainly the Calvinists ever since have.

" Are you saying that we need to read each book of the Bible differently according to whom it was written? "
Yes, and Yes, to get the proper context in which the writer was writing.
James is writing to the 12 tribes of Israel, those who have come to faith in Jesus Christ in his letter, so, he is writing to these Jewish converts to the christian faith.
So James is writing in a Jewish context, the way that the Jews would have thought.
James chapter 1:
James 1
1. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
To: Cronos
" So, where did you learn your beliefs? Did you pick up the Bible on your ownsome and completely with no influence from anyone else or from any other commentary etc arrive at your beliefs? "
I don't believe or trust in “ Rome “ Heresy, or should it be said ? the Heresy of Rome.
To: Cronos
" If you DO believe that we are saved by God's grace, then you do "care" what the Church teaches because you believe the same "
It depends in what " Church " your talking about here.
The man made religion of the church of Rome ? or the real body of Christ, his church, his body ?
To: Cronos
" What I said was Calvinists deny Genesis and that God created man good. On the contrary, they say that God created imperfect beings.
( * The Calvinists have made their deity a deity that creates evil. Since they do that, they hence believe their deity has evil in Him * )
That's ironic and rich for you to say that, when ? it's the Catholics who worship idols, who worship Saints, pray to saints, worship the Mother Mary, who ? is not a deity, but, yet ? the Catholics make Mother Mary a deity, a God.

" 1- JOHN:
5. " This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
6. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness "
Get your facts and bible right and straight.
John is not talking about those who claim they are Christians, but, are struggling with some sort of sin.
If you bother to read this letter carefully, it's in close relation to the first chapter of the Gospel of John.
The Gospel of John:
( * John 1 (King James Version)
John 1
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Note/Comments:
John in his letter opens up his letter just like this verse in the Gospel of John )
2. The same was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Note/Comments:
( * just like in the letter of John, John says that God is light, Jesus Christ is the light of the world * )
5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Note/Comments:
( * those of unbelief are in darkness, i.e. hence, the religious phony Phariases who lived according to the law, but, did not see the light of Jesus Christ , nor believed in Him * )
And in verse 14, the bible tells us, that the word of God, became flesh, and lived among us.
The Gospel of John chapter 1 verse 14:
14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
The " word " of God that became " flesh " was and is Jesus Christ.
Those who reject him, are those who are in " Darkness " John in his letter is not talking about sin here.
The bible verse that the con-men of the workers of works, and merits love to fool the sheep with:
1JOHN:
5. " This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. "
Ohh yes, another bible verse that the works based Salvationers love to trow around to justify their works, merits, keeping the law to earn their way into Heaven.
Of course ? they do not put the bible, or bible verse in it's proper context.
Once again, it shows how people can be deceived by the works based con-man decievers of works and merits.
John was writing to the church, to those who were being troubled by some people who pretended to be Christians, who crept into the church, the gnostics.
If you even bother to study your bible, you might just learn something instead of relying on your supposed " Teachers " or " Pastors "
These " anti-Christs " that the Apostle John was talking in his letter here were Gnostics.
They were spreading Gnosticism in the church and caused many to fall away.
What was their teachings ? The teaching was ? there were those who were teaching that Jesus was only a ghost, a spirit, and that Jesus never came in a actual physical body, no body, no flesh, no flesh, no atonement for sins... It does not take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
Yes, many true believers were being trouble by these gnostic heritic teachings.
The Apostle John had to set them straight and go over what they truly believed in.
John even told them in his letter to " Test the spirits " to see if they are whether from God or not.
The Apostle John called these Gnostics " anti-Christ " because they did not believe in the physical person of Jesus Christ, and so ? if they deny he was a actual physical human ( that was both GOD and man ) then ? they can deny his death, and him being put in a tomb, and him being raised from the dead.
If you even bothered to actually read these letters of John, you would actually know what John was saying instead of learning from your supposed " teachers " or pastors " who could be only telling you what they want you to believe in.
Now, to get back to what the Apostle John really meant in this verse:
" This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness "
God is light, Jesus Christ is the light of this world.
Many people have the misconception that this verse meant, that it implies sin, i.e., hence the word " Darkness " .
John is writing to these Christians who were being troubled by these anti-christ, these gnostics who didn't believe that Jesus actually came in a physical body.
Jesus told us that if we " abide " in him, then ? he will abide in us.
John is saying here in this verse, that ? if we claim we are Christians, but, deny what the apostles have taught us, and every thing that they taught us about the SON of God, about Jesus Christ, in how he came in human flesh to die on the cross for us, then ? you are in " Darkness " , that you are believing in " another " Jesus, or thing, and not the Jesus Christ that John and the other Apostles are preaching and teaching.
If you don't abide in Jesus Christ ? then ? you are in " Darkness " .
To: Ruy Dias de Bivar
" So why is it that this one little letter from James (which was not accepted by the church for 200 years) carries more weight than all of Pauls letters? Is it because still have a desire to EARN their salvation? "
They want to keep the " Works based Gospel " going and alive because of their motives, they ( the con-man works based Salvationers ) want to deceive people, and by works, they want to keep people under their control.
It's the same thing with a tyrannical government, they hate it when " the people " come to the knowledge of " freedom " so they have to keep people under condemnation, under fear, and under their control for their own lusts and power.
Their type of Gospel ( in which ? in no Gospel of God anyway ) is tyranny, they are a bunch of tyrants who want to control the people.
To: Ruy Dias de Bivar
Wonder why the institutionalized “ Church “ was against the printing press ? it's because they didn't want the people to know the truth about God's Grace, for any knowledge of the bible ( in their minds ) had to come through the approved “ Church “ leaders.
When you ask a Catholic to show you where in the Bible one can find the Lord instituting the Mass, you will be directed to the passages dealing with the “Last Supper”. You will be told that when Christ says the words, “this is my body,” the bread is changed into His body and the same miracle occurs with the wine.
The intellectually honest person, when reading passages dealing with the last Passover meal that Jesus shared with His apostles, will quickly notice the absence of words such as sin, Sacrifice, offering, Priest, etc. You must force your presuppositions into the text to retrieve the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Mass and the Priesthood.
Remember, to deny the doctrine of the Mass is to be hell-bound according to the Council of Trent as well as Vatican II.
Nowhere in the New Testament does anyone celebrate a “Mass”. It is not some miracle, but is in reality a falsehood, a religious ritual that says the work of Christ on the cross was deficient and incomplete. It should be rejected as all false doctrine should.
