Had a shrink tell me it was because of a lack of oxygen to the brain...remember watching a PBS show on NDE's a while back - some shrink was leading the charge at "debunking" the idea with the same story - lack of oxygen to the brain - but he did acknowledge that the experience as life ebbed - the bright light, peaceful feeling, reunions with lost loved ones - was quite pleasant, and ended up by saying something like "it really is nice for nature to arrange things like that as death comes" - I'm still laughing - if you're going to admit "nature" can act purposefully to comfort man, why not go all the way and give the credit to "God".....

LOL
