iTunes salvation: Roman Catholic Church approves Confession app

Are you a sinner? Don't worry, there's an app for that. The Roman Catholic Church has approved a recent iTunes addition called Confession, a $1.99 app that bills itself as "the perfect aid for every penitent." As you can see above, it lets you pick a commandment and tick off all your sins, keeping a running tally to bring into the confessional with you -- a sort of anti-tasklist, if you will. Can't find your particular misstep? No problem! You're able to add your own, custom dastardly deeds, filling in those gaps the app's authors didn't think anyone would fill. Now all it needs is a random sin selector: shake the phone to instantly get a wicked suggestion. That certainly could make boring Thursday nights at the dormitory a little more exciting.

I think this is a good idea. A thorough self examination is really important to making a good confession and any useful guide to a thorough self examination is just that, useful.

Hi Rn. Haven't encountered you on FR in a long time. Good to see you're still around.

As usual, the leftist secular press prints falsehoods and distortions about the Church ... and as usual, the protestants on FR slurp it up without a moment's critical thought.

How do we know it isn't uploading the info to the company who sold the product?

I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. But if it helps people make a thorough examination of conscience in preparation for a good confession, more power to it.

I hope, however, that it’s something you can download, rather than a matter of sending all of your sins out onto the net for blackmailers to find.

I don’t understand the “shake the phone to get a wicked suggestion” part. Isn’t this app supposed to help you with confession, not provide more ways to sin?

The talentless QueerMedia just couldn’t resist inserting an unfunny, gratuitous shot at morality could they?

Hi Rnmomof7-"Maybe next it will be the last rites on Skype"

Your quote suggests that it replaces a Priest.

It's a guide not something to confess or replace a priest or person.

Then don't check boxes. Use it as a guide and write your sins down on a good old fashioned piece of paper.

The only place it uploads to is the "virtual confessional". Your penance will be communicated directly.

Interesting concept in light of the fact the courts have ruled your phone is subject to search and seizure in the event of an arrest.

No priest penitent privilege in this app.

“So Mr.Smith you want to tell me about the note you made about the 6th Commandment. Hmm?”

This is just an aid to examination of conscience, not a replacement for the sacrament. Sorry to disappoint you.

Despite the telltale sign that it's hogwash because I have never seen any British news source that didn't distort news on the Church. It's a dead giveaway!

One other thing I would caution is that this really has not been approved by Roman Catholic Church, as this article written by a writer misleads the reader to believe, but rather by a priest in the USCCB and another at a church in Indiana...a tremendous difference.

It is too bad you can't really go through confession and receive absolution through the app...with a priest being on the other end.

This app is just a tally of the sins, so that, when one does go to confession, they'll not forget to ask for forgiveness for that sin.

Of course, receiving forgiveness for every sin is certainly necessary, to be in a state of grace, so it is important not to forget, but this app is titled Confession and should really be more appropriately titled, Sin-Sum.

Pope John Paul II, before his death, cautioned us that “the confusion between good and evil” is the “most dangerous crisis which can afflict man.”

And this post is causing confusion........need I say more?

Are you a forgetful sinner? There’s an app for that.

This is nothing new, there have been guides and checklists and books like this for years.
