ELCA proposes tougher rules for departing congregations

According to the Lutheran CORE (Coalition for Renewal), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) leaders are proposing new rules that will make it harder for congregations to leave the denomination.

At its Nov. 12-14 meeting, the ELCA Church Council proposed amendments to the denomination’s constitution for consideration at the 2011 Churchwide Assembly.

The changes are proposed as nearly 300 congregations have completed current departure requirements, and another 140 congregations have begun the process. These congregations represent a loss of 200,000 ELCA members, according to the newsletter. As has been the case in the PCUSA, many congregations are departing due to the denomination’s theological drift away from the Bible – including new policies on same-sex marriage, gay ordination and teachings that contradict Scripture.

“How ironic that ELCA leadership is so committed to disregarding the Law of God on sexual ethics but so determined to use the law of humans to coerce congregations to remain in the ELCA,” said the Rev. Mark Chavez, director of Lutheran CORE.

The ELCA’s proposed departure language, according to Lutheran CORE, includes the following:

“If they will not hear of Me, leave that place, taking nothing. Shake the dust from your feet and GET OUT.”

OK, it is not a direct translation, but I believe it is what the Lord would have these congregations do.

A congregation will be required to vote by a two-thirds majority to join a new Lutheran church body, or else it will be “conclusively presumed” to have become an independent Lutheran congregation, potentially forfeiting its property.
It only takes a majority vote to join another Lutheran Church body, so this is purely about punishing dissent and stealing property.

How very democratic of them. While they’re change things around, how about put in a new rule like, “Before the ELCA can institute policies on same-sex marriage, gay ordination and teachings that contradict Scripture they must have concurance from three quarters of each congregation at large.”

Well we are SOL I am guessing. But then again like I told you guys we don't take funds from ELCA and are very self sufficient. We run our own missions, run our own payroll and have a 5000 member church and do our own things.

I have only seen ONE pastor bring up politics (left of course) and she was thrown out the next week in a unanimous vote.

I for one won't leave because our church is associated with the ELCA. Will I ever go to an ELCA event? NO!!!

But I have too many friends and that church really helped me through my mom's death and our Sr. Pastor and his wife are like a second family to me and they know I'm a right wing conservative and we get along great!!! Except they are Viking / Twins fans which doesn't gel with my love for the Bears and White Sox...

ELCA proposes tougher rules for departing congregations

Meanwhile their acceptance of sin makes it harder for Christians to stay.

Golly Gee Batman, why don’t they look into the problem of why these people want to leave.

Maybe they don’t want queers giving them Communion.

I’m sure his bishop wanted to “consult” with him, especially after Luther referred to the Pope as the Anti-Christ.

Get out NOW, while the getting’s good. Don’t let the door hit y’all on the way out!!!!

Once again: Deadline for holding a second vote on a Sunday under the present rules is August 7.

Counting back 90 days to a date for a first vote is Monday May 9.

Counting back the 10 days (including 2 consecutive Sunday) notice provision for Special Congregation meetings is April 29 for postmark.

If your congregation is at all serious about departing the ELCA the Council should make its move to call a special meeting no later than March and absolutely no later than April.

The clock is ticking....

Your church can still do as Clear Lake, IA, Zion Lutheran did: pass resolutions (that require 51 percent approval) to repudiate the ELCA's anti-Biblical stances.

. . .Another resolution stipulated the reduction funding to the ELCA to $1 per month. The church had already been withholding its benevolence giving to the ELCA since August 2009. At that time the ELCA Churchwide Assembly adopted a resolution which would allow gay pastors in a committed relationship to serve congregations. Prior to the resolution, gay pastors had to commit to celibacy. Members voted to distribute benevolent fund money withheld from the ELCA, pending a decision of the congregation through the church itself.

One of the resolutions passed by 82 percent of the congregation stated the church would reject and disassociate from the actions, policies, procedures and teachings of the ELCA and would not recognize the authority of the ELCA in moral, ethical or theological teaching.

This new strategy indicates that this hemorrhaging is a much bigger problem than the ELCA is letting on about. Remember when they first blessed sodomy, and then said the exodus was insignificant and a non-impact? don't believe it.
